INTERNATIONAL Midland-ACS Over Pressurisation Device

Product catalog summary
Introduction
The Over Pressurisation Device (OPD) SILSAVE is designed to protect pressure-sensitive equipment from overpressure events, particularly in severe offshore environments. It is part of the 3550 Series Air Preparation Equipment and offers various pressure ranges and connection sizes, with options for low-temperature environments and ATEX certification.

Specifications
The OPD is constructed from 316 stainless steel and features auto shut-off, ¼ turn actuator protection, and system instrumentation protection. It operates within an ambient temperature range of -20ºC to +80ºC, with a low-temperature version available down to -50ºC. The device is available with manual or automatic drain options, with maximum inlet pressures of 20 bar and 17 bar, respectively.

General Description
The OPD “STEMSAVER” protects downstream equipment from overpressure events, including regulator failures. It includes an integral pressure regulator and a protection valve and sensor system. The device automatically fails safe within 30 milliseconds, shutting off the outlet and managing downstream pressure. It features a reset button for fault indication and can be reset manually.

Development and Failure Modes
Failures in pressure regulators can lead to overpressurisation, potentially damaging sensitive equipment. The OPD addresses common failure modes such as diaphragm rupture and regulator seat failure. It is engineered to prevent damage by managing pressure spikes and ensuring quick response times.

Performance Characteristics
Response times depend on system pressures at failure, with maximum times specified for worst-case scenarios. Pressure spikes during valve deployment are minimized by system volume, with larger volumes reducing the likelihood of exceeding trip pressure.

Test Results
Tests with small and large actuators demonstrate the OPD's effectiveness in managing overpressure events. The device's response time is measured from trip pressure to regulated pressure restoration, ensuring actuator pressure does not exceed trip values.

Variants and Options
The OPD is available in variants with different regulated outlet pressures and trip pressure ranges, each with specific maximum response times. Options include mounting brackets, pressure gauges, and tamperproof caps.

Over Pressurisation Device OPD SILSAVE From the day the company was founded in 1956 it was decided that our business should be built on the premise of creating solutions that far outweigh expectations. Over recent years users of Regulators and Filter Regulators have become aware of the consequences of the failure in service of such equipment including the potential for damage to pressure sensitive instruments, actuators and process valves which may compromise critical ESD systems, resulting in unscheduled production shutdowns and expensive repairs. We have always had a strong, experienced and...

Over Pressurisation Device OPD SILSAVE Development Failures of pressure regulators can result in the over pressurisation of the downstream line, as the self-relieving capacity of the regulator is insufficient to cope with major failures. Usually a relief valve of sufficient capacity is fitted into the system to hold the pressure down to an acceptable level. However a relief valve flow is sized on a pressure differential between set pressure and over pressure, usually 10%. Thus on a set pressure of 4.5 barg a pressure rise to 4.95 barg would have to flow sufficiently to hold the pressure at 4.95...

Over Pressurisation Device OPD SILSAVE Over Pressure Device Operating Poppet Valve 0.2 Litre Isolation Valve ¼ Turn Ball Valve Overpressure Valve Performance Characteristics • Response times are dependant upon the actual pressures within the system at the point of failure; all times stated within the specification section are maximums taken at the lowest extreme of the pressure range (worst case). The magnitude of any pressure spikes exceeding the trip pressure which occur during deployment of the valve are dependant upon the system downstream volume; a larger system volume decreases the likelihood...

Trigger Test- Blue = Actuator Pressure (Bar) The graph above is an overpressure test result with a larger 3 litre reservoirto simulate the actuator. An overpressure signal is allowing the 11 barg supply pressure to bypass the regulator, simulating a ruptured diaphragm. The response time of the device is measured as the time between the pressure within the device reaching the trip pressure and the actuator pressure returning to below the regulated pressure (see dashed lines on graph & right hand column of table).
