The Power of Parallel Hybrid Parallel Hybrid maintains the mechanical connection bet ween the engine and propeller shaf t, with the electric motor acting on the drive shaf t in parallel with the engine. The power split is a mechanical device that allows transfer of power bet ween its connections. You can drive the propeller directly from the engine or from the electric motor, or from both. You can also disconnect the propeller for a standalone generator function. The engine is disconnected during regeneration. 16

The Power of Serial Hybrid In a Serial Hybrid system the conventional diesel engine is replaced by an electrical motor. A bat ter y bank is connected to the common electric power bus, which is connected to the motor. The electrical energ y is either provided by variable speed power generators or by the bat ter y bank. With large bat teries you can have long periods of electric propulsion (and/or driving onboard electrical appliances) without resor ting to the generator. 17
