INBOARD PERFORMANCE SYSTEM A revolutionary Motor Yacht propulsion system Buyers of motor yachts, performance sports yachts or sport fishing yachts, and other craft with traditional inboard propulsion have an increasing demand for reduced emissions - in particular the carbon footprint - but also for improved handling enhanced onboard comfort, higher speed, and fuel savings. The Volvo Penta IPS system is the answer, solving all the above along with driving pleasure, reliability and outstanding environmental proper- The successful Volvo Penta IPS propulsion system is being expanded further with a third and most powerful version matched together with our new 13 litre engine. This means we are reinforcing the IPS range to a per- formance power level equal to 1050 and 1200 shaft hp, suitable for approx. 55 up to 70+ feet planning yachts in twin installation. In triple and quad applications the system reaches a power level up to 4800 shaft hp, ap- plicable for yachts in 100 feet range. The new larger Volvo Penta IPS 3 version shares concept, technology and software with its smaller siblings, IPS 1 and IPS 2, thereby setting new standards in: - Improved efficiency, higher speed with less power, re duced fuel consumption/extended range, and powerful - Substantially enhanced maneuverbility regardless of speed and excellent course keeping capability offers safe and predictable handling - Onboard comfort is greatly enhanced thanks to much lower levels of sound, vibrations and exhaust fumes - Installation is greatly simplified - More space available for accommodation - Improved safety and redundancy - Ease of service, the complete system from helm to pro- peller cone supported by one supplier All this is combined with the usual benefits of a traditional inboard such as a robust, high strength construction, excellent corrosion resistance and the propellers under A conventional inclined shaft system starts to lose efficiency at speeds acc. to the lower curve in the diagram below. Low efficiency means less power is transformed to thrust and that increasingly more power is needed to increase speed, which in turn results in dramatically increased fuel consump- tion, reduced cruising range and more exhaust emissions. With outstanding efficiency over the whole speed range, 28-40 knots, (see the upper curve in the diagram) the Volvo Penta IPS offers a revolutionary solution to this. Volvo Penta IPS has as much as 35% better efficiency at 38 knots. This means that engine power is transmitted much more efficiently into the water resulting in: - Increased speed - Reduced fuel consumption - Faster acceleration - Dramatically lower emissions per nautical mile Propulsion efficiency

As an example, the diagram shows the required power at various speeds for a 62 foot, twin installation, 27 ton sports cruiser for the two systems. In general terms, if the top speed is above 35 knots, the performance advantage is as gine), while below 35 much higher efficiency with the Volvo Penta consumption and environmental impact will be reduced cor- Thanks to this superior efficiency, the product designa- tions 1050/1200 communicate the power required for a conventional shaft installation to reach a comparable perfor- mance level. Why is Volvo Penta IPS so superior? Part of the...

- The propellers are producing horizontal thrust and are working in undisturbed water with no cavitation. - Increased number of propeller blades (7) with smaller diameter and reduced blade load, in combination with good tip clearance to the hull, means that the pressure pulses created by the propellers have very little effect - Exhaust fumes are minimized. First of all, the new en- gines have very low exhaust emissions, and secondly, the exhausts are emitted into the prop wash and car- ried well behind the boat.
