Voith Linear Jet

Voith Linear Jet

Product catalog summary
Introduction
The document provides an overview of the Voith Linear Jet (VLJ), a marine propulsion system designed to combine the best features of propellers and waterjets. It emphasizes reliability, efficiency, and low noise levels.

Operating Principle
The VLJ is a fully submerged nozzle system that optimizes jet stream acceleration and rudder inflow by canceling rotor-induced swirl. This design eliminates the need for a long inlet tunnel, resulting in linear flow and reduced marine growth sensitivity.

Performance Prediction
Voith has developed a "Numerical Towing Tank" to assist naval architects in predicting VLJ performance. This tool calculates hull interaction effects and cavitation issues, providing guidelines for optimal integration and positioning.

Design Features
The VLJ is robust, with minimal moving parts and low maintenance requirements. It features a water-lubricated composite bearing and a double-walled nozzle for reduced noise and vibration.

Efficiency and Speed
The VLJ is designed for speeds between 20-40 knots, offering high efficiency where traditional propellers and waterjets fall short. It maintains efficiency across a range of speeds, making it ideal for semi-fast ships.

Maneuverability
The VLJ provides precise maneuvering with low engine loads, using thrust allocation algorithms optimized for specific vessel parameters.

Draft Reduction
The VLJ can be integrated into the hull at various depths, allowing for draft reduction without efficiency loss.

Comparison with Other Propulsors
The document includes a comparison of the VLJ with traditional propellers and waterjets, highlighting its superior efficiency and performance.

Application Examples
Examples include wind service support vessels, fast ferries, yachts, and navy/coastguard ships. Each application benefits from the VLJ's efficiency, maneuverability, and reduced noise levels.

Conclusion
The Voith Linear Jet offers a new standard in marine propulsion, combining the advantages of propellers and waterjets to deliver high efficiency, low noise, and versatile application potential.

Voith Linear Jet-2

A New Propulsion Standard. The Voith Linear Jet combines the best properties of propellers with the best properties of waterjets. Low installation complexity, low sensitivity to marine growth, sustained high efficiency across the vessels’ speed range and high bollard pull are borrowed from the propeller side. Reduced vessel draft, the ability to reach high speeds with high efficiency and low noise and vibration levels are borrowed from the waterjet side. Operating principle The Voith Linear Jet (VLJ) is a fully submerged custom-shaped deceleration/acceleration nozzle with a stator section aft...

High efficiency for (semi-) fast ships The Voith Linear Jet focusses on the area from around 20−25 4,00 knots up to 40 + knots. For this area, neither a propeller nor a traditional waterjet provides a 100 % satisfying solution. The 3,00 efficiency of propellers starts a steady decline at higher ship speeds when cavitation, noise and vibration levels all increase. Traditional waterjets only become efficient at speeds over 35 2,00 knots and have a dramatic low efficiency for any speed below 30 knots. In between these, the Voith Linear Jet— V = 10 kna delivers 1,00 —V= constant high efficiency up...

Application Examples. The main application envelope of the Voith Linear Jet is between 25 and 40 knots. Outside this speed range other features like the reduced draft versus a propeller or a higher bollard pull can make the Voith Linear Jet the preferred option Wind service support vessel Bollard pull, maneuverability and transit efficiency are main operational requirements for a workboat like a wind service support vessel. Optimized nozzles for bollard pull are available in the VLJ range. To obtain favorable transit efficiency with these high-bollard pull nozzles, a vessel-optimized hull integration...
