Directional Acoustic Transponder

Directional Acoustic Transponder

Product catalog summary
Overview: The Benthos DAT (Directional Acoustic Transponder) is an advanced extension of the Teledyne Benthos ATM-900 Series modem. It is designed to estimate azimuthal and vertical arrival angles of messages from remote modems using a modified ultra-short baseline (USBL) system. This system utilizes broadband signals for improved range and angle estimation, especially in low Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) environments.
Key Features:
  • Combines acoustic modem and USBL functionality in a single compact unit.
  • Offers a 360-degree azimuthal field of view and vertical coverage from +90º to -50º.
  • Suitable for both surface and subsurface platforms, including Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs).
  • Multiple frequency options: Low Frequency (LF), Mid Frequency (MF), and Band-C.
  • Available in pressure housing or as an OEM board set with a matching transducer.
Technical Specifications:
  • Acoustic Modem: Data rates range from 140 to 15,360 bps with a 6MB datalogger. Supports MFSK and PSK modulation schemes, with distances ranging from 2-6 km, extendable to 20+ km using repeaters.
  • USBL: Provides 360-degree azimuthal and +/- 50-degree vertical beamwidth. Range accuracy is 0.3 meters, and angle accuracy is +/- 0.3 degrees RMS.
  • Physical Characteristics: Depth rating of 2000 m, with dimensions of 5.5 in diameter by 33.9 in length. Weighs 24 lbs dry and 11 lbs wet.
  • Power: Operates on 300 W•Hr internal batteries, with external power options available.
Applications: The Benthos DAT is ideal for integration on AUVs, providing unparalleled navigational accuracy. Its compact form and low power consumption make it versatile for various marine applications.

Directional Acoustic Transponder-1

A Teledyne Benthos Positioning Datasheet Teledyne Benthos Directional Acoustic Transponder (DAT) All-In-One: Range, Bearing, and Data Communication The Benthos DAT (Directional Acoustic Transponder) is an extension to the Teledyne Benthos ATM-900 Series modem which automatically estimates the azimuthal and vertical arrival angles of a message sent by a remote modem. The system is a “modified” ultra-short baseline (USBL) which uses a broadband component of a typical modem message to form estimates of arrival angle(s). While conventional USBL devices employ tonal signals, the appropriate processing of wide band signals provides far better combined range and arrival angle estimation, especially at low Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). The device offers a clear 360 degree field of view in azimuth, and an approximate vertical coverage spanning + 90º overhead to -50º below horizontal. The DAT’s compact size and low power consumption make it appropriate for both surface and subsurface platforms. Acoustic modem and USBL functionality can now be integrated on Autonomous Underwater Vehicles in one system. Mounting the DAT on an AUV, as an inverted USBL system, can provide navigational accuracy unsurpassed by other systems.
