Product catalog summary
Overview of Teknotherm RSW-System
The Teknotherm RSW (Refrigerated Seawater) system is designed for rapid cooling and storage of pelagic fish catches, such as mackerel and herring, in refrigerated seawater. This system is ideal for preserving large catches by quickly reducing the temperature to near freezing, allowing for extended storage without significant quality loss. This method enhances the quality of fish for human consumption and fishmeal production, meeting higher standards due to reduced quotas.
RSW Principle
The RSW system operates by recirculating seawater through storage tanks and a chilling system. The chilled seawater is distributed evenly across the tank's bottom, cooling the fish as it passes upwards. This process keeps the fish semi-floating and cools them efficiently. The system allows for water flow reversal and includes mechanisms for maintaining water quality.
Storage Tanks
RSW tanks are typically arranged side by side to maximize vessel width usage, with capacities generally filled to 80% fish and 20% water. Proper insulation and smooth interior surfaces are crucial to minimize heat ingress and ensure efficient operation.
Flexible Refrigeration Installations
The refrigeration machinery, including chillers, compressors, and pumps, can be installed as self-contained units or separate components, placed according to specific needs on the vessel. Pumps should be positioned as low as possible for optimal operation.
Refrigeration Machinery
The system includes heavy-duty compressors, either reciprocating or screw type, and condensers of shell & tube or plate type. The RSW chiller is a flooded shell & tube evaporator, cooling seawater as it passes through inner tubes. The electric panel features motor starters and controls, which can be traditional or PLC type with LCD displays. Water pumps for condenser cooling and RSW circulation are standard, with options for electric or hydraulic drives.
Certification and Refrigerants
Teknotherm equipment can be certified in-house or by class, and the RSW plant can operate on modern halocarbon refrigerants or ammonia. For detailed technical specifications, refer to separate component leaflets.

Teknotherm RSW-system Teknotherm RSW plants mean rapid chill-down and storage of the catch in Refrigerated Sea Water. Storing the catch in RSW is an effective and cost-saving method of preserving the catch until landing ashore or further processing on board. The catch is brought down close to the freezing point of seawater in a minimum time by Teknotherrrf s highly efficient RSW-chillers of flooded shell & tube type. In simple terms, a RSW-system functions as follows: Seawater is recirculated by pumps through the tanks (therefore product) and the chilling system. The seawater is chilled by the...
