Sonic Log Ultrasonic Speed Sensor Speed- and Temperature Sensor Airmar’s revolutionary CS4500 makes cutting edge, high technology speed sensing affordable. Instead of a paddlewheel, it uses two transducers mounted in one compact housing to detect particles in the water and calculates speed based on their distance apart. The CS4500 reacts instantaneously to changes in boat speed and is one of the most reliable and accurate speed sensors in the market. Instead of the CS4500, four very economic paddle wheel transducers are available. Normally, speed is averaged over both sensors. If one sensor fails, only the remaining one will be used. On multi hulls it may be necessary to measure boat speed only on the leeward hull. Sensor switching will then be a function of wind angle or heel angle.
