General Superstructure: Gerben Baaij Amsterdam Gerben Baaij NOTARISBOOT ELIZABETH History In 1894 Gerben Baaij started out as an independent boat, sloop and gig builder in the old cocoa mill of Blooker, behind the Weesperzijde on the Amstel. Gerben Baaij was from an old boat builders' family. The family line can be traced as far back as to one Frans Fransz of Middelburg (De Baaij), ship's carpenter, who married in Amsterdam in 1684. A deed dated 1813 names Gerrit Baaij, master shipwright and his son Gerben, shipwright, as partners in Amsterdam. Gerben himself also worked as a ship's carpenter...
