Sikaflex®-298

Product catalog summary
Product Overview: Sikaflex®-298 is a slightly thixotropic, one-component polyurethane adhesive designed for marine applications, particularly for teak deck bedding. It cures upon exposure to atmospheric moisture and complies with International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations.
Specifications:
  • Chemical Base: 1-component polyurethane
  • Color: Brown
  • Cure Mechanism: Moisture-curing
  • Density: 1.2 kg/l
  • Application Temperature: 10 – 35 °C
  • Skin Time: 100 minutes
  • Curing Speed: Refer to diagram 1
  • Shrinkage: 6%
  • Shore A Hardness: 30
  • Tensile Strength: 1.2 MPa
  • Elongation at Break: 600%
  • Tear Propagation Resistance: 4 N/mm
  • Service Temperature: -50 – 90 °C
  • Shelf Life: 12 months (unipack), 9 months (pail)
Product Benefits:
  • Long open time
  • Slightly thixotropic
  • Sound deadening properties
  • Elastic behavior
  • No highly inflammable solvents
Areas of Application: Suitable for bonding deck covering materials made from synthetic resins (excluding polyethylene and polypropylene) and for bedding-in teak plank decking. Applicable substrates include GRP, marine plywood, steel, aluminum with anti-corrosion coating, and stainless steel. It is recommended for professional users with prior testing for adhesion and compatibility.
Cure Mechanism: Cures by reacting with atmospheric moisture. Lower temperatures slow down the curing process.
Chemical Resistance: Generally resistant to fresh water, seawater, diluted acids, and caustic solutions. Temporarily resistant to fuels and oils, but not resistant to organic acids, glycolic alcohol, concentrated acids, or solvents.
Method of Application:
  • Surface Preparation: Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from contaminants. Surface treatment is crucial for a lasting bond.
  • Application: Process between 10 °C and 35 °C. Use a notched spreader for application. For impervious substrates or accelerated curing, lightly spray with water before joining.
  • Removal: Uncured material can be removed with Sika® Remover-208. Cured material requires mechanical removal.
Further Information: Additional guidance and specific application advice are available from Sika's Technical Department. Safety Data Sheets and other publications are available upon request.
Packaging Information: Available in 600 ml unipack and 10 l pail.
Health and Safety Information: Users must consult the Safety Data Sheets for safe handling, storage, and disposal information.

PRODUCT DATA SHEET TYPICAL PRODUCT DATA (FURTHER VALUES SEE SAFETY DATA SHEET) CQP = Corporate Quality Procedure A) 23 °C / 50 % r. h. B) storage below 25 °C DESCRIPTION Sikaflex®-298 is a slightly thixotropic 1-component polyurethane adhesive which cures on exposure to atmospheric humidity. It is used for Teak deck bedding. Sikaflex®-298 meets the regulations set out by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). PRODUCT BENEFITS ■ Long open time ■ Slightly thixotropic ■ Sound deadening properties ■ Elastic behavior ■ Contains no highly inflammable solvents AREAS OF APPLICATION Sikaflex®-298 is suitable for bonding deck covering materials made from synthetic resins (except polyethylene and polypropylene), and for bedding-in of teak plank decking laid on top of the sub deck surface. Suitable substrates include GRP, marine plywood, steel, aluminum sealed with an anti-corrosion coating (epoxy or polyurethane-acrylic based) and stainless steel. Sikaflex®-298 has a longer skinning time as the Sikaflex®-298 FC version and might be used where elevated temperature and/or higher humidity are expected. Sikaflex®-298 is suitable for experienced professional users only. Test with actual substrates and conditions have to be performed to ensure adhesion and material compatibility.
