Product catalog summary
Description: SIGMADUR 580 is a two-component high solids semigloss recoatable acrylic polyurethane finish known for its excellent resistance to corrosion, sea water, and various chemicals. It offers superior color and gloss retention, is non-chalking, non-yellowing, and cures at temperatures as low as -5°C. The product is tough, abrasion-resistant, and can be recoated after long atmospheric exposure. It is lead- and chromate-free, available in white and other colors upon request.
Principal Characteristics: The coating is resistant to splashes of mineral and vegetable oils, paraffins, aliphatic petroleum products, and mild chemicals. It has a mass density of 1.4 g/cm³ and volume solids of 75 ± 2%. The VOC content is a maximum of 191 g/kg or 269 g/l. Recommended dry film thickness is 75 μm with a theoretical spreading rate of 10 m²/l.
Application Instructions: The substrate should be dry, free from contamination, and sufficiently roughened if necessary. The temperature should be at least 3°C above the dew point, with a maximum relative humidity of 85% during application and curing. The mixing ratio by volume is 82:18 (base to hardener), and the temperature of the mixed components should be above 15°C to avoid the need for extra solvent.
Thinning and Application: Thinner 21-06 is recommended, with a volume of 5-10% depending on the application. For airless spray, a nozzle orifice of 0.38 - 0.42 mm and a pressure of 18 MPa is recommended. Safety precautions include avoiding inhalation of spray mist and contact with skin or eyes due to the toxic polyisocyanate curing agent.
Curing and Pot Life: The curing time varies with temperature, ranging from 22 days at -5°C to 3 days at 40°C. Pot life also varies, from 7 hours at 10°C to 2 hours at 40°C. Adequate ventilation is necessary during application and curing.
Safety and References: Safety sheets 1430, 1431, 1433, and 1434 provide detailed safety instructions. The product is subject to modifications to comply with local regulations, and users must ensure they have the current data sheet before use.
Limitation of Liability: The information provided is based on laboratory tests and is intended for guidance. PPG Protective & Marine Coatings does not accept liability for loss, injury, or damage resulting from the use of this product, as the application conditions are beyond their control.
