Product Description: MIL-DTL-24441/19C Type III F159 is a two-component, low VOC, epoxy polyamide zinc-rich primer. It provides excellent cathodic protection, adhesion, water resistance, and chemical resistance.
Product Characteristics: The primer has a flat finish and is gray-green in color. It has a volume solids content of 64.6% ± 2% and a weight solids content of 84.9% ± 2%. The VOC content is less than 340 g/L. The zinc content in the dry film is 85% by weight. The mix ratio is 1:4 by volume, and the recommended spreading rate per coat is 5.0 to 6.0 wet mils, resulting in 3.0 to 4.0 dry mils.
Drying Schedule: At 5.0 mils wet, the drying times vary with temperature: 12 hours at 35-40°F, 8 hours at 41-60°F, 6 hours at 61-80°F, and 4 hours at 81-100°F. The minimum recoat time ranges from 24 to 8 hours, and the maximum is 14 to 7 days. The cure to service time is between 64 hours and 6 days.
Recommended Uses: Suitable for use over aluminum and steel substrates to provide chemical and corrosion resistance. It complies with MIL-DTL-24441, F159, Type III specifications.
Surface Preparation: Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of contaminants. For iron and steel, the minimum preparation is SSPC-SP6/NACE 3 for atmospheric service and SSPC-SP10/NACE 2 for immersion service.
Application Conditions: The air and surface temperature should be between 35°F and 100°F, with a relative humidity of 85% maximum. The material temperature should be at least 60°F.
Application Equipment: Airless spray with Teflon packings and continuous agitation is recommended. Conventional spray requires continuous agitation. Brush application is suitable for small areas only.
Application Procedures: Mix Part B thoroughly, combine with Part A, and agitate. Allow the mixture to sweat-in before application. Continuous agitation during application is necessary to prevent zinc dust from settling.
Performance Tips: Stripe coat all crevices and sharp angles. Use a 50% overlap with spray application to avoid defects. Do not exceed recommended pot life or mix previously catalyzed material with new.
Safety Precautions: Refer to the MSDS sheet before use. Clean equipment with Hi-Flash Naphtha, R2K5.
Warranty: Sherwin-Williams warrants products to be free of manufacturing defects. Liability is limited to replacement or refund of the defective product.
