CRYSTIC ® GELCOAT 12PA

CRYSTIC ® GELCOAT 12PA

Product catalog summary
Introduction
Crystic Gelcoat 12PA is a pre-accelerated Iso-NPG brush gelcoat available in limited colors, suitable for FRP composite tooling.

Application
Designed for FRP composite tooling, it offers resilience, heat resistance, and can be polished to a high gloss.

Formulation
Before use, the gelcoat should reach 18º-20ºC. Stir well to avoid aeration and regain thixotropy. Add 2% Butanox M50 catalyst for curing. Ensure thorough mixing.

Pot Life
Pot life varies with temperature: 15ºC - 15 minutes, 20ºC - 11 minutes, 25ºC - 9 minutes. Ensure all components are at or above 15ºC before curing.

Application Guidelines
Apply at 0.5-0.6mm wet film thickness, using 500-750g/m² of gelcoat. Avoid adding fillers or pigments to maintain durability.

Recommended Testing
Test pigmented gelcoats under specific conditions to ensure desired surface finish.

Physical Data - Uncured
Appearance: Mauvish Cloudy, Viscosity: Thixotropic, Specific Gravity: 1.1, Acid Value: 16 mgKOH/g, Volatile Content: 34%, Stability: 3 months at 20°C, Gel time: 9 minutes at 25°C with 2% catalyst.

Physical Data - Cured
Barcol Hardness: 46, Water Absorption: 17 mg, Deflection Temperature: 83°C, Elongation at Break: 2.0%, Tensile Strength: 64 MPa, Tensile Modulus: 3800 MPa.

Post-Curing
For optimal life, fully cure the mould at 40ºC for 30 hours or leave in warm conditions for 2-3 weeks. For severe conditions, post-cure at elevated temperatures.

Storage
Store in original container, away from sunlight, ideally below 20ºC but not exceeding 30ºC. Open containers only before use.

Packaging
Available in 25Kg and 225Kg containers.

Health and Safety
Refer to the separate Material Safety Data Sheet.

CRYSTIC ® GELCOAT 12PA-1

CRYSTIC GELCOAT 12PA Chemical Resistant Iso - NPG Brush Tooling Gelcoat Introduction Crystic Gelcoat 12PA is a pre-accelerated Iso - NPG brush gelcoat and is available in a restricted range of colours. The information contained in this technical datasheet also applies to pigmented versions. Application Crystic Gelcoat 12PA is designed for use in the manufacture of FRP composite tooling. Features and Benefits Crystic Gelcoat 12PA is resilient and heat resistant and can be polished to a high gloss. Formulation Crystic Gelcoat 12PA should be allowed to attain workshop temperature (18º - 20ºC) before use. Stir well by hand, or with a low shear mixer to avoid aeration, and then allow to stand to regain thixotropy. Crystic Gelcoat 12PA requires only the addition of catalyst to start the curing reaction. The recommended catalyst is Butanox M50 (or other equivalent catalyst) which should be added at 2% into the gelcoat (please consult our Technical Service department if other catalysts are to be used). The catalyst should be thoroughly incorporated into the gelcoat, with a low shear mechanical stirrer where possible. Pot Life Temperature The gelcoat, mould and workshop should all be at, or above, 15ºC before curing is carried out. Application Crystic Gelcoat 12PA is a tooling gelcoat and the application should be controlled at 0.5-0.6mm wet film thickness. As a guide, approximately 500-750g/m² of gelcoat mixture (depending on pigment) will give the required thickness when evenly applied. This will allow for any rubbing down which may be necessary during the life of the mould. Additives Crystic Gelcoat 12PA is supplied in a restricted range of colours. This eliminates the potential for mixing errors with small quantities of pigment paste. The addition of fillers or pigments can adversely affect the durability of the mould in use. Recommended Testing It is recommended that customers test all pigmented gelcoats before use under their own conditions of application to ensure the required surface finish is achieved.
