Product catalog summary
Introduction
Unsaturated polyester resins used in Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) are flammable. Certain applications, such as rail, marine, land transportation, and building, require fire retardant systems to ensure safety during evacuation. These systems must comply with national and European fire standards, focusing on low smoke and toxic fume emissions.

Crystic® Fireguard Range
The Crystic Fireguard range includes advanced fire retardant gelcoats and topcoats designed to protect composites from fire. These products are suitable for various markets, including rail, land transportation, marine, and building and construction.

Approvals
The Crystic Fireguard products have received several approvals:
  • Crystic Fireguard Gelcoat 70PA: Firestarr CEN TS 45545-2 HL2 with Crestapol 1212
  • Crystic Fireguard Gelcoat 72PA: BS 476 Part 7, Class 1 with 1355PA, DIN5510-2 S4, SR2, ST2 with Crestapol 1212, M1 F1 rating with Crestapol 1212
  • Crystic Fireguard Gelcoat 73PA: BS 476 Part 7, Class 2 with 2.3700PA modified general purpose resin
  • Crystic Fireguard Topcoat 75PA Excel: BS 476 Part 7, Class 1, BS476 Part 6, Class 0, M1 F1 rating with Crestapol 1212

Technical Performance
The Crystic Fireguard range offers high fire retardancy, low surface spread of flame, superior handling, low porosity finish, and easy repair. The 75PA Excel is available in limited colors, while 70PA, 72PA, and 73PA are available in all RAL colors.

Low Smoke Performance
Crystic Fireguard Gelcoat 70PA with Crestapol 1212 produces significantly less smoke compared to standard fire retardant laminates, with a three times lower optical density value.

Typical Properties
  • Crystic Fireguard Gelcoat 70PA: Opaque, colored, thixotropic, specific gravity 1.30, stability 3 months, geltime 12 minutes.
  • Crystic Fireguard Gelcoat 72PA and 73PA: Opaque, colored, thixotropic, specific gravity 1.40, stability 3 months, geltime 8 minutes.
  • Crystic Fireguard Topcoat 75PA Excel: Opaque, colored, thixotropic, specific gravity 1.35, volatile content 20-27%, stability 2 months, geltime 10 minutes, Barcol Hardness 40.

External Burn Test
The Crystic Fireguard Topcoat 75PA Excel demonstrated protective properties in a burn test, showing reduced flame spread and enhanced safety.

Certain applications such as rail, marine, land transportation and building need systems that delay burning long enough for effective evacuation. In some areas, there is an additional focus on low levels of smoke and toxic fume emission during burning. The need for fire retardant composites is specified by the relevant national and European fire standards.
