701 Marine Lanterns - 1

PROJECT SUMMARY Madeira Island Illuminates Buoys with Carmanah 701 Marine Lanterns Madeira Department of Fisheries Madeira Island, Portugal Model 701 Solar Marine Lanters Transfer of the buoys from the quay to the barge Navigational buoys located in the Atlantic Ocean off the southwest coast of Madeira Island in Portugal are using the power of the sun to direct mariners around a section of artificial reef. Provided by Carmanah's authorized Portuguese distributor, Ahlers Lindley, Carmanah 701 solar power marine lanterns were installed as part of a turn- key solution for aids-to-navigation around Located over an area of approximately 100 meters (328 feet) square, the artificial reef required marker buoys to define a restricted area over the reef's location. Renowned for significant swell and extreme weather conditions, the installation location presented challenges for installing and maintaining aids-to- navigation. Exposed to a southwest ocean swell, the site required equipment that could withstand severe conditions. Exposure to ocean swell can be an important consideration when installing lighting for aids-to-navigation. Equipment must endure constant jostling from the movement of waves against the buoys and lanterns are constantly exposed to the corrosive elements of salt water spray. The southwest swell found at the installation site, not only creates a more challenging environment for the lanterns but also makes servicing the lanterns a difficult and dangerous task. Carmanah's 701 solar LED marine lanterns provided an ideal solution for this difficult location. Where battery powered lighting alternatives are susceptible to water ingress and corrosion, Carmanah solar marine lanterns are entirely self-contained, with solar panels, batteries and LEDs in one compact unit that is completely Designed to operate maintenance free for up to five years, Carmanah's solar lanterns incorporate LED technology that requires no bulb replacements and is unaffected by vibration. Maintenance and repair cycles are reduced, saving money and increasing Affixed to the buoys prior to installation at the designated sites, Carmanah's 701 solar marine lanterns were secured using a simple, secure three bolt mounting system. Training was provided to the Madeira Department of Fisheries on the programming of the lights. With over 250 different flash codes, the 701 lantern can be programmed to flash according to the requirements of the location. Programming can be completed and changed as needed by the end user with a universal remote. The lanterns continue to function reliably in the harsh conditions present at the site. The navigational aids have received positive comments from Department officials who maintain and service and
