The ARS-100 includes user-programmable electronics in a 200 meter rated pressure housing with an omni-directional transducer. A deep water version is available, ARS-100D, which can operate up to 1,000 meters. Battery operated, the ARS-100 and the ARS100D have 16 user-selectable transmit modes, 8 test modes, and 8 chirp output modes. Once activated, via a mechanical switch, the ARS-100 will transmit an acoustic chirp signal every 30 minutes for up to 13 months. A high accuracy temperature controlled crystal controls the timing of the signal.
