THE REFLEX ZEN Written by Laurie Lindsey, Reflex Team Member. The 2012 Reflex Zen is a ski to consider if you are looking for a change. With its sleek appearance and similar design to the Reflex Warp, the Zen offers a well-balanced ski that is quick and forgiving. THE TEST Water Temp 82 degrees Bindings: Reflex and RTP 65” Zen Standard fin Wing 8 degrees PREVIEW COMMENTS The first set on the ZEN, I could feel the positive characteristics, but before taking the first set, there was an inspection by curious ski friends. The typical water skier inspection; holding it up to the sky, looking at the rounded corners, studying the tail and the most favorite of all, the push and flex, which makes me cringe. I was told this ski would be quick across the wake, have the ability to decelerate, execute a nice carving turn, and still maintain the speed needed in the turn. By the sixth pass, I could feel the angle in the wake cross which was followed by a determined tight radius turn and the Zen carried controlled speed across the wakes to the next buoy as predicted SET UP Set up was easy. A light carbon plate mounts on the ski with bond, and a top carbon plate easily fits into the slots making it easy to move your bindings forward or back. TURNS Both the on and off side turns were symmetrical. The turn radius is tight and contrary to negotiating a sharp turn and waiting for a handle pop, the ski carried speed at the end of the turn and before you know it, you are early at the next buoy. The design of the Zen creates a feeling of good balance in the turn and less falling over as you can stand up taller around the buoy. WAKE CROSS A comment from a boat judge during a tournament was "wow, that ski is a rocket ship!" The wake cross is fast and predictable and it starts immediately after the turn with no hesitation. In water temperature that is typically very warm, and sticky, I found it to be quick and not dragging behind the boat. Francesco Caldarola OVERALL The Reflex Zen is a ski that stays with you throughout the entire course. When you have the feeling of "I'm done", you are still on top of the water with the ski out in front of you. The Zen is a classical high performance tournament ski, dedicated to skiers who want to ski easily at the first run! Rocker and edge shapes have been optimized to take into account the innovations in waterskiing techniques.
