I have never experienced anything like the entrance to the Rio Dulce. You could describe it as a fjord covered in jungle with some cliffs 200 feet high. It snakes through about five miles of this scenery, eventually emptying into a broad plainslike topography called El Golfete. The journey upriver was something you can only experience in Guatemala with a landscape unique to this part of Central America – sheer beauty at every turn.

Arriving in Lake Izabal, you’re greeted by the Castille de San Felippe, a fort from the early 1500s that protected the great lake and its people from conquistadors and opposing tribes looking to settle and live from the riches of the lake. The freshwater lake, far from the days of conquering Europeans, serves as a weekend getaway for many families from Guatemalan cities.
