Product catalog summary
General Description
Aluma Protect Aluminum Epoxy Primer 4400/4401 is a two-component epoxy-polyamide coating designed for corrosion resistance on sandblasted aluminum surfaces. It offers excellent durability against fresh and saltwater, industrial chemical fumes, and humid environments. It is primarily used as a primer for aluminum pleasure crafts and requires a topcoat to prevent chalking.
Application Information
The primer consists of two components mixed in a 1:1 ratio by volume. After mixing, it should stand for 15 minutes at 70°F before application. It can be applied using a brush, roller, or spray, with a recommended wet film thickness of 3.6 mils per coat. One or two coats should be followed by Pettit Protect 4700/4701 for enhanced protection.
Surface Preparation
Proper surface preparation is crucial for optimal coating performance. Aluminum surfaces should be degreased with 97 Epoxy Thinner and sandblasted or sanded to ensure good adhesion.
Physical Data
The primer is an epoxy/polyamide with a low luster finish and bright yellow color. It has a theoretical solids content of 45% by weight and 28% by volume, with a coverage of 450 sq. ft/gal. The VOC content is 596 g/l max.
Application Data
The primer can be applied at temperatures between 50°F and 90°F. It has a pot life of 6 to 20 hours depending on the temperature. Dry times vary with temperature, requiring sanding if recoat intervals are exceeded.
Systems
For bare aluminum, sandblast or sand to clean metal, apply one coat of Aluma Protect, and follow with Pettit Protect 4700/4701. For previously primed surfaces, ensure they are in sound condition and sand before applying Aluma Protect. It is not recommended for use over antifouling paints.

Aluma Protect 4400/4401-1

ALUMINUM EPOXY PRIMER Simply better. • Smooth finish provides an excellent bonding surface for additional primers or topcoats. • Excellent water, chemical and corrosion resistance for aluminum surfaces. • High Performance Strontium Chromate Primer for all aluminum surfaces. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Aluma Protect Aluminum Epoxy Primer 4400/4401 is a corrosion resistant, two component epoxy-polyamide coating for use on sandblasted aluminum where maximum resistance to fresh or salt water is required. The complete coating system is resistant to wa- ter, many industrial chemical fumes, and very humid environments. It is intended as a corrosion resistant primer coat for aluminum pleasure craft and has excellent durability in exterior exposures, although, like most epoxies, it will chalk if not topcoated. APPLICATION INFORMATION Stir both components thoroughly. Mix the two components together in the ratio of 1 part of Component A to 1 part of Component B by volume. Allow to stand 15 minutes at approximately 70° before us- ing. (Allow to stand at least 30 minutes if temperature is between 50° and 65°F) May be applied by brush, roller, conventional or air- less spray. Thinning is not normally required for application, how- ever, small amounts of 97 Epoxy Thinner may be used if necessary to facilitate application. Wet film thickness should be 3.6 mils per coat, which yields 1.0 mil dry film thickness. A wet film thickness gauge should be used to monitor paint application. One or two coats of Aluma Protect 4400/4401 should be overcoated with Pettit Protect 4700/4701 to provide a corrosion and chemical resistant barrier for use on all aluminum craft and surfaces. SURFACE PREPARATION Coating performance, in general, is proportional to the degree of surface preparation. Follow recommendations carefully, avoiding shortcuts. Inadequate preparation of surfaces will virtually assure inadequate coating performance. Degrease aluminum by wiping with 97 Epoxy Thinner. Sandblast, sand or grind the surface to achieve a good adhesion profile. PHYSICAL DATA SOLIDS (theoretical) APPLICATION DATA Conventional Spray Temp Recoat Bottom Paint Launch If these recommended intervals are exceeded, sand thoroughly with 80 grit sandpaper before recoating or applying bottom paint.
