Engine Block
The M944T features a four-cycle, 4-cylinder, liquid-cooled, turbocharged, overhead valve diesel engine. It includes an induction hardened crankshaft made of forged carbon steel, which is stronger than cast iron. Cooling System
The engine uses a freshwater cooling system available in heat exchanger or keel cooled configurations. Fuel System
The direct injection system includes glow plugs and a Bosch-type in-line injection pump with a 5% mechanical governor for precise AC frequency control. It features pintle injectors, a mechanical lift pump with a hand primer, and a large spin-on fuel filter. The stop solenoid controls the fuel rack to eliminate speed variances and linkage problems.

Intake and Exhaust
The engine complies with all current US EPA emission standards at the date of manufacture. It includes a liquid-cooled turbocharger and a washable air cleaner in a cast intake manifold to reduce intake noise. The exhaust system features a cast iron, wet exhaust elbow for safety.

Lubrication System
The lubrication system includes a full-flow, spin-on oil filter with a bypass and a 10.5 qt (10.0 ltr) center well oil pan, allowing for 250-hour oil change intervals. An oil drain facilitates quick and clean oil changes.

DC Electrical System
The DC system uses reliable relays instead of an unrepairable printed circuit board. It includes a 12-volt starter motor and battery charging alternator with a regulator and belt guard. The standard panel features a remote mount S-3C with an hour meter, stop-start switch with run light, preheat switch, and gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and DC voltage. Safety shutdowns are included for low oil pressure, high coolant temperature, and high exhaust temperature.

AC Generator
The Northern Lights direct-coupled, brushless AC generator is maintenance-free, offering a 12-wire 50 or 60 Hz output standard with a conservative heat rise rating of 95°C/50°C ambient. The automatic voltage regulator (AVR) provides true 300% short circuit capability and circuit breaker protection, with quick ±1% RMS no-load to full-load voltage regulation.

Special Equipment
The unit includes a welded steel base frame with a drip pan, four platform mounts to isolate vibration, a belt guard for operator protection, and is painted with white, long-life polyurethane paint. Operator’s and parts manuals are standard.
