X2K DIVING - August 2006. - Page NORTH SEA BOATS 1 X2K DIVE / WORK BOAT GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The 11.00 metre X2K is an advanced, high speed design which can be configured for sheer pleasure, diving, commercial, patrol or military use. It offers superior sea-keeping, efficiency, speed and safety in all operating conditions and is well suited for offshore fishing and open water crossings. This cutting-edge Deep V design is based on the latest offshore racing hulls and is CE Approved to Category “C”. The longitudinal underwater steps reduce hull resistance when planning by 10 – 15 %, significantly improving speed and fuel efficiency. The configuration is specifically designed for diving, with a forward windscreen and helm console protected by a long full width hardtop canopy, covering back to the aft end of the fore and aft side bench seats which have cushions and gear storage underneath. Aft of the bench seats are racks for 8 tanks then clear space at the gunwhales for “backflip” entry and a removable dive ladder. Corner step / seats are fitted in the aft end of the cockpit, facilitating entry in and out of the boat from the side swim ladder. Between these seats is a lift out section that creates a 4 person rear sofa. When up, deck space is increased for kitting up. The rear swim platforms increase usable space for gear and crew retrieval and aid stern-to beach landings. The lockable forward cabin has two single bunks for the crew and can be used for gear and luggage storage. The dive ladder conveniently stows away on top of the canopy. At the bow a raised rail can be fitted for extra safety and to assist people boarding from the beach. There is a flush lid over the anchor locker which houses a storage tube that retains a folding anchor. Handrails above the forward windscreen and along the hardtop canopy are thoughtfully combined with wide teak cabin-side walkways to make movement to and from the foredeck both comfortable and safe. The forward cabin as it is in all models, has a double Vee berth, with a foot-well and good sitting headroom. A windscreen wiper can be fitted for increased visibility in bad weather, as can roll-down clear screens along the sides to increase protection from the elements. . The captains seat folds down to allow for seated or standing steering, and is positioned to give a clear view of divers boarding from the side ladder. The X2K is specially designed to fit in a standard 40 foot high-cube cargo container. Ensuring fast, easy, safe, cost efficient, global and domestic transportation. This also gives a distinct advantage for those wishing to trailer their boat. CONSTRUCTION: Hand-laid composite GRP, with balsa-cored sandwich below the chine and closed cell high density foam sandwich in the decks. The hull is made of multi-directional fibre glass layers, with two full length reinforcing stringers. The balsa / foam core increases panel stiffness and reduces the weight usually associated with solid GRP boats. This offers great strength and robustness and maximises hull integrity in the event of a collision. The boat is self-draining as the cockpit deck is above the waterline. ENGINES AND STEERING: For simplicity of maintenance and operation the boat is powered by outboard motors, using two motors with counter-rotating propellers to make steering lighter and more balanced. Thought should be given to the use of 4 bladed stainless steel propellers, as they are less prone to break from impacts. They will slightly reduce top-end speed but increase fuel efficiency at cruising speeds. The top-mount twin gear shift and throttle controls are genuine parts matching the brand of engine selected. Controls for both engines are located side by side. All instruments and controls are clearly visible and accessible. Steering is hydraulic with a link arm between the 2 engines.
