Product catalog summary

Overview

The MTU Series 8000 diesel engines are designed specifically for high-power marine applications including fast commercial vessels with large payloads and military ships. These engines emphasize reliability, ecological design, low operating costs, and ease of installation due to their compact and integrated system.

Key Benefits

  • Economy: Low life-cycle costs, long service intervals, competitive pricing, and straightforward maintenance.
  • Engine Characteristics: High power output and unrestricted low-load operation.
  • Environmental Performance: Low fuel consumption, reduced exhaust emissions, and low noise levels.
  • Service: 24/7 worldwide support.

Technical Features and Components

Crankcase

Constructed from ductile cast iron with integral intake-air channels and a centrally positioned camshaft. Features include hydraulically tensioned pins for main bearing caps and a large inspection cover.

  • Exceptional rigidity and strong crankshaft support.
  • Main bearings replaceable without engine removal.

Cooling System

Split-circuit cooling ensures engine components contact only coolant, optimizing coolant, oil, and intake-air temperatures under all conditions.

Cylinder Heads

Made of ductile cast iron with annular coolant channels, two inlet and two exhaust valves per cylinder, cooled valve inserts, valve rotation mechanisms, and optimized ports.

  • Designed for high ignition pressures.
  • Replaceable seat inserts reduce maintenance costs.
  • Lower black smoke and NOx emissions.

Pistons

Composite design with forged steel crown and steel skirt, oil injection cooling, two compression rings, one oil scraper ring, and large-diameter gudgeon pin.

  • Supports high ignition pressures.
  • Low oil consumption and emissions.

Service Block on Auxiliary PTO End

All main auxiliary systems are located here for simplified servicing and fewer ship system interfaces.

Fuel Injection System

Common-rail technology with operating-status based injection control optimizes injection timing, pressure, and flow rate without mechanical adjustments.

  • Virtually no exhaust blackening.
  • Low fuel consumption across all engine speeds.

Oil Filtration

Main oil-flow filter with constant recirculation and bypass filtration via oil centrifuges ensures consistent filter grade, environmental friendliness, and low maintenance.

Power Unit

Modular assembly including cylinder head, spacer, liner, piston, and connecting rod, bolted to the crankcase. Separates sealing and power transmission functions.

  • High stability and low blow-by.
  • Long service intervals and ease of maintenance.
