The MTU Series 8000 diesel engines are designed specifically for high-power marine applications including fast commercial vessels with large payloads and military ships. These engines emphasize reliability, ecological design, low operating costs, and ease of installation due to their compact and integrated system.
Constructed from ductile cast iron with integral intake-air channels and a centrally positioned camshaft. Features include hydraulically tensioned pins for main bearing caps and a large inspection cover.
Split-circuit cooling ensures engine components contact only coolant, optimizing coolant, oil, and intake-air temperatures under all conditions.
Made of ductile cast iron with annular coolant channels, two inlet and two exhaust valves per cylinder, cooled valve inserts, valve rotation mechanisms, and optimized ports.
Composite design with forged steel crown and steel skirt, oil injection cooling, two compression rings, one oil scraper ring, and large-diameter gudgeon pin.
All main auxiliary systems are located here for simplified servicing and fewer ship system interfaces.
Common-rail technology with operating-status based injection control optimizes injection timing, pressure, and flow rate without mechanical adjustments.
Main oil-flow filter with constant recirculation and bypass filtration via oil centrifuges ensures consistent filter grade, environmental friendliness, and low maintenance.
Modular assembly including cylinder head, spacer, liner, piston, and connecting rod, bolted to the crankcase. Separates sealing and power transmission functions.

Note: Power ratings are defined according to DIN/ISO 3046 at intake air temperature 25 °C and sea-water temperature 25 °C, with rated power available up to intake air temperature 45 °C and sea-water temperature 32 °C.
The engine and gearbox management system integrates safety and testing functions with interfaces for remote control and monitoring systems. It features redundant backup and is maintenance-free.
Graphs illustrate standard load profiles for application groups 1B and 1DS, with TBO values of 24,000 hours for M91 and M71/M71L models, and 32,000 hours for M71R.
