surprise LOCAL & GLOBAL 35m expedition motor yacht Surprise was at home the moment she was launched. Built for expedition cruising in the South Pacific, she was the first superyacht to enter full time charter service in exotic Fiji, a comfortable four-to-five day cruise from Auckland. This 35m steel/aluminium expedition yacht was also one of the first new build superyachts to combine the capability of an ocean going commercial vessel with the luxury of a true superyacht without compromise to either attribute. She was built in 2001 for a successful Fiji-born Australian businessman with a passion...

LONGEVITY RELIABILITY In 2012, Mea Culpa returned to New Zealand for the first time since her 2003 launch. It was a significant moment: during her time ‘back home’, she was to clock over her first 100,000 nautical miles. Like crossing the equator for the first time, the 100,000th mile should be celebrated. McMullen & Wing offered to host a party for the owner, captain, crew and for our own staff to mark the significance of the occasion. The owner refused. No, you can’t put on a party for us. Because we want to put on a party for you. At that time, nearly 10 years on, there were some 50 staff...

Michael Peters is one of the world’s most respected powerboat designers. Famous for his offshore racing successes, he is also known for a wide range of pleasure boats. He has designed five McMullen & Wing vessels. Here he tells the story of the magnificent 25m express cruiser Jariya: “Typical of most American buyers, the owner of Jariya originally wanted to build in the US, but was disappointed in the quality and budget he found available. We had recently completed three large sport fishing yachts with McMullen & Wing that had come out both beautifully and right on weight, so we asked the owner...

McMullen & Wing is an advanced composite builder, an aluminium yacht builder and a steel ship builder, all rolled into one. Under the direction of a visionary owner, McMullen & Wing rebuilt and restored her to her fullest glory. Rescued and given new life, sailing the oceans once more, Shenandoah inspires fresh generations around the world to turn towards the sea. R Shenandoah ENEWED & EBORN Just as the best custom yachts are built in reflection of their owners, often a new owner will seek to weave their own selves into the fabric of their...

The key to that success lies in our people and a can-do attitude that pervades every aspect of the business. It is a culture which has been built over many years: our longest serving employee is Tony Harvey (left), now well into his fourth decade with McMullen & Wing, where he started as an apprentice. Like the company itself, Tony is multi-skilled, leading both structural fabrication and interior fitout activities, and offering in-depth insight into all facets of the construction process. Most know McMullen & Wing as highly respected superyacht builders, but dig a little deeper and you will find...
