Rope Terminations and Assemblies:
  • Splices: Preferred method of termination, reduces strength by no more than 10%.
  • Knots: Can reduce strength significantly, up to 60%.
  • Sewn Terminations: Stronger than knots, consistent, easy to inspect.
Technical Information:
  • Specific Gravity: Indicates buoyancy; materials like polypropylene and HMPE float.

  • Coiling: Proper coiling techniques are essential to prevent damage. For 3 Strand ropes, withdraw from the center of the coil. Braided ropes should be "hanked" in a figure of 8 to avoid twisting. Reels should rotate freely on a central pin.
  • Sheaves, Pulleys, and Rollers: Using ropes around sheaves reduces their strength and life. A sheave diameter 8-10 times the rope diameter is recommended, with certain materials requiring up to 20 times. The groove should support the entire rope, and 'V' grooves should be avoided.
  • Winches and Capstans: Ropes should be wound neatly and tightly on winches to prevent burying between layers. A formula for calculating the length of rope that can be held on a winch drum is provided.
