LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN DECK MACHINERY High-performance ARR hawser winch technology advances from Markey Machinery The current expansion in the energy industry, particularly LNG shipping, among other forces, is increasing the need for more dynamic and exotic shipping systems. Environmental concerns and "not in my back yard" attitudes have resulted in the location of energy terminals outside populated areas and protected waters. This has generated the need for tugs and towing systems that are capable of safely handing large cargo vessels in extremely dynamic and variable open-water conditions. controlled slip and high kilowatt-dissipation capability, and the ability to freewheel line out at extremely high speeds. The winches are powered by one or more AC motors that are controlled by variable frequency drives. Real time load and speed sensing provide the information required to the system's controller to allow the winch to respond during changing dynamic conditions. These load and speed data are displayed at the operator's console to keep him in touch with the response of the system during ship-handling operations and are recorded via a data-logging system for later analysis. Markey currently has a number of Render-Recover utilities in operation, including their DESS-52 186kW Electric High- Performance ARR Hawser Winch, DESF-48 75kW Electric High- Pcrformance ARR Hawser Winch, and is currently developing double-drum waterfall versions of 186kW, 242kW, and 567kW. For further information contact: Markey Machinery, USA. Web: www.marketmachinery.com Under such dynamic conditions, traditional towing practices such as locking towing winch drums to create line pulls beyond the winch's drive capacity can create excessively high-peak line loads or slack line conditions that raise the spectres of fouled propellers or snapping tow lines. As a result, most responsible towing companies have started looking for towing systems that are more dynamic in nature to accommodate these ever demanding conditions. Such systems would need to be able to operate in rough water conditions by a flexible and dynamic winching system that would maintain a "constant" line tension, thereby reducing the potential of slack line Render-Recover is a term trade-marked by Markey Machinery of Seattle, Washington, USA to describe its dynamic tensioning hawser winch technology. It refers to the capability of the winch to accommodate dynamic conditions between the tug and the tow without allowing destabilising high line loads, or slack line conditions. "Render" refers to the condition where the wave action produces forces separating the tug from the tow, resulting in line spooling off of the winch to prevent overload. A combination of pneumatic mechanical brakes and dynamic resistance braking of the electric motor restricts and controls this outhaul. The "Recover" action occurs when wave forces move the tug and the tow toward each other and the controller drives the electric motor to respond very quickly to retrieve the line in such a manner so as to prevent a slack line condition. LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN DECK MACHINERY Improved winch wire control from Rolls-Royce Marine Rolls-Royce Marine has developed an electric spooling device which is of particular interest for fishing winches. Rolls Royce insist that their device gives excellent spooling while significantly reducing wear and tear on the wire. The device can be applied to new trawl winches, older Rauma Brattvaag winches and in some cases retrofitted to winches of other makes. The function of a spooling device is to guide wire on to the drum of a winch in a controlled fashion. This prevents the wire from piling up...
