Product catalog summary
Anchor & Chain Size Selection Guide
This section provides guidance on selecting the appropriate anchor size and chain for different boat lengths and wind conditions. It emphasizes the importance of matching anchor weight to boat size and choosing high-quality ground tackle. Recommendations include using larger sizes if in doubt and ensuring the anchor and chain are securely fastened.
Anchoring Techniques
For secure anchoring, it is crucial to deploy enough chain and warp to maintain a horizontal pull on the anchor. The document outlines the importance of the correct scope, which allows the anchor to set properly and provides stability against wind gusts. Key points include deploying more anchor rode in extreme weather and ensuring secure fastening of the bitter end.

MANSON ANCHORS THE RIGHT SETUP THE TRUSTED PERFORMER SINCE 1972 CHOOSING THE CORRECT ANCHOR & TACKLE Manson Anchors has grown from a family of professional boat builders, marine engineers and staunch world cruisers. Founded in 1972 and based in Auckland New Zealand, Manson Anchors began with the aim of manufacturing anchors suitable for the harsh local conditions. For safe anchoring it is important to match the anchor weight to the size of your boat. Choose the right size and length of chain and warp and make sure the combined ‘ground tackle’ is of the best possible quality For more than 15 years, Manson has been producing stainless steel anchors for leading boat builders and boat owners throughout the world. From production boats to individually designed and built Superyachts, some of today’s finest vessels are equipped with Manson Anchors. Exclusive suppliers of anchoring gear to the Australian production boatyard Riviera for over five years, Manson Anchors have been designed, developed, tested and sold in the most demanding boating regions on earth, Manson now service yards across Asia, North America, Europe and the United Kingdom and The Middle East. LEADING THE WAY IN ANCHORING TECHOLOGY Manson are recognised by all major classification societies; Lloyds, ABS, DNV, GL & BV. Manson anchors are subjected to rigorous testing. Once CAD designs are approved, seabed testing in three different soil types is conducted, then onsite inspections certify all welding procedures. Finally, each anchor is proof load tested using a hydraulic rig. The anchor is then stamped with a certification number, with certificates enclosed upon shipping. In order for Manson to consistently exceed expectations, every weld is performed by a Lloyds approved welder and is covered by a Lloyds/ASME IX welding procedure. Utilising Finite Element Assessment to accurately determine distortion, load limits and material dimensions, Manson Anchors can determine the exact requirements for each application. ANCHOR & CHAIN SIZE SELECTION GUIDE ANCHOR SIZE (lbs) 15 BOAT LENGTH By 1985, Manson was New Zealand's largest anchor manufacturer and started exporting to Australia and the Pacific Rim. In 1990, the Manson Plough became recognised as the most popular anchor in Australasia, growing in reputation as a true 'World Class Anchor'. If in doubt choose larger sizes. It’s worth taking a little more time to retrieve a larger size anchor and chain than running the risk of dragging. 20 25 30 35 40 45 50 60 80 100 125 150 6m 8m 10 m 12 m 14 m 16 m 18 m 20 m 22 m CHAIN LENGTH AND SIZE 9m 11 m 15 m 11 m 22 m 14 m 17 m 20 m 26 m 14 m 35 m 18 m 24 m CHAIN SIZE KEY SHORT GALVANISED ANCHORS 8mm 10mm 12mm PLUS WARP OF SUFFICIENT THICKNESS AND LENGTH WARP LENGTH & WIND SPEED WIND SPEED WARP LENGTH up to 10 knots 5 times the depth up to 35 knots 7 times the depth over 35 knots 10 times the depth ANCHORING TECHNIQUES MAKING SURE YOUR VESSEL IS SECURE Lower your ground tackle with enough chain & warp to provide a horizontal pull on your anchor. Slowly pay out enough warp to provide the correct length and depth ratio as the boat pulls back. Correct scope allows your anchor to dig in and ‘set’. The chain lays on the sea bed and curves up to the boat. This ‘catenary curve’ acts as a spring to dampen the swing and surge of your boat in sudden wind gusts which could result in anchor drag. • As a general principle, the more wind - the more warp or chain. • In case of extreme weather as much anchor rode as possible should be deployed. • Always ensure the bitter end (end not connected to anchor) is securely fastened to the boat. • Always ensure good communication between skipper and anchor deployer YOUR LOCAL MANSON DISTRIBUTOR specify the anchor best specify a manson
