I t is always exciting to recreate a classic design from one of the world's master designers, especially when that designer is Olin Stephens. "Escort was both a part of the tradition of the commuter-cruisers and a unique creation of her own. Built originally for William .1. Strawbridge of Philadelphia in 1940, the handsome, 40 foot launch functioned as a naval vessel during World War II, then won renown as Briggs Cunningham's tender in the postwar years of America's Cup competition. A speedster, she was capable of whisking her owners along at 28 1/2 mph. Although her main purpose was to transport people on yachty errands in her spacious cockpit, she did offer a small cabin below, with two berths, a mini galley and head. Layers of cold-molded African Mahogany cover a foam core center producing a very light but exceptionally strong hull eliminating the need for the traditional frames and planking of the original design.
