Synthetic fiber ropes have become essential in offshore heavy lifting, offering strength comparable or superior to steel wire ropes but with significantly reduced weight. This enhances crane payload capacity, safety, and handling efficiency, while minimizing risks of load damage.
R&D is centralized in Maia, Portugal, focusing on synthetic fiber rope innovation for heavy lifting. A new production site in Viana do Castelo supports manufacturing and storage of heavy lift ropes and slings.
Products like LANKO®FORCE and GAMA98® Dyneema® tethers provide advantages over steel and chain, including lighter weight, near-neutral buoyancy, corrosion and fatigue resistance, and easier installation. They are proven in offshore risers and mooring systems.
Lankhorst offers 12-strand LANKO®FORCE ropes with MBLs up to 3,400t (grommet) and GAMA98® Dyneema® ropes up to 300mm diameter with MBLs up to 8,500t. Benefits include high strength, light weight, corrosion resistance, torque-free behavior, and improved safety.
Ropes are available unjacketed or jacketed with polyester (durable but non-floating), TIPTO® (abrasion resistant and floating), or Dyneema® (excellent abrasion and cut resistance). Eye protection options include soft polyester or Dyneema® covers and hard polyurethane coatings with galvanized thimbles.
A dedicated rope test machine supports loads up to 1,200 tonnes, enabling tension-tension fatigue and proof load testing per APL, ABS, and DNV standards to ensure performance and certification compliance.
For deepwater lifting beyond 2,000-3,000m, synthetic fiber ropes reduce weight and improve efficiency compared to steel wire ropes. Fiber Rope Deployment Systems spool synthetic ropes on steel drums and transfer them via vessel-mounted hang off frames, preventing spooling damage and enabling full crane capacity at depth.
LANKO®FORCE 12-strand braided Dyneema® ropes offer a lightweight, high-strength alternative to steel wire ropes for offshore running applications. They float, resist UV, abrasion, chemicals, absorb no water, and have a melting point around 147°C, with weight seven times lower than steel wire ropes of equal strength.
Rope diameters range from 6mm to 144mm, weights from 2.3 to 1150 kg per 100m, and minimum breaking forces from 35 kN to over 12,000 kN. Jackets influence buoyancy and abrasion resistance. All ropes comply with ISO 2307:2005 standards.

Too large to fit into either normal containers or onto conventional transporters, the transportation, handling and installation of heavy items are normally one-off projects. The lighter fibre sling allows the crane to handle heavier loads, as there is less weight in the sling, enabling maximum payload lift. As a result the industry is now faced with the need for lifting and lowering heavy and sizable subsea processing units into deeper waters.
