Fuel Tanks Which plastic is best? here are many types and grades of plastic resins used in rotational molding. Depending on the design of the finished part, several variables need to be considered: density (stiffness or flexibility), melt index (flow rate), low temperature impact, high temperature distortion, ultra-violet stability, FDA acceptability, environmental stress crack resistance (ESCR) and chemical resistance. The most widely used material currently available for rotomolding is polyethylene. Although Kracor manufactures parts utilizing polypropylene, nylon, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) and other specialized materials, the vast majority are produced with polyethylene. Product Application Flexible, FDA acceptable, poor stiffness, no ESCR Better stiffness, excellent ESCR, good low temperature impact, FDA acceptable Best stiffness Food containers, toys, liners Linear Low Density (LLDPE) High Density (HDPE) Crosslinkable High Density (XLPE) Excellent impact strength, ESCR, and low temperature impact Furniture components, chair shells, tankage (except fuel), drop-in boxes, liners & bins, dock boxes, dock floats, buoys Furniture components, tankage (except fuel), decks, housings Fuel tanks, dock floats, oil reservoirs Plastic fuel tanks have many advantages The boating industry has come to recognize the tremendous advantages of plastic tanks for gasoline and diesel fuel. Major benefits are: safety: Tanks are fully tested under 33 CFR183.510 (a) and meet standards set by the U.S. Coast Guard, the National Marine Manufacturer’s Association and the American Boat & Yacht Council. Where required, our tanks also carry ISO 10088 and “CE” approval for the European community. low cost: Plastic fuel tanks cost less than comparable metal tanks. convenience: Plastic fuel tanks are easily installed. Gas level is clearly visible through translucent tanks. material: Kracor plastic fuel tanks are made of super-tough, high-density crosslinked polyethylene resin widely used for fuel tanks on motorcycles, farm machinery, snowmobiles, and U.S. army vehicles. weight: Plastic fuel tanks are 40% lighter than comparable metal tanks, contributing to greater fuel efficiency. durability: Seamed metal tanks can fracture and leak, while plastic tanks feature a seamless construction that is virtually indestructible. Plastic tanks are rust and corrosion proof and have ultraviolet inhibitors to prevent deterioration in sunlight. All Kracor fuel tanks are 100% pressure tested.
