Oil Spill Detection Datasheet - 1

DELIVERING DETECTION SOLUTIONS MANTADIGITAL RADAR DETECTION SYSTEMS FOR NAVIGATION, OIL SPILL DETECTION AND SECURITY Radar has many more uses than just navigation. With Kelvin Hughes’ multifunction MantaDigital radar, support vessels can use the oil spotting mode to make spill detection and clean up more efficient. Without any additional hardware these vessels can carry out their support duties and maintain an oil spill lookout and detection capability. The detection of oil spills by radar systems is based on the dampening effect oil has on surface waves. An oil slick at sea “smoothes” the water surface and thus reduces the radar energy that is reflected back to the observer. This creates a darker signature or “shadow” in the image which, with appropriate processing can be differentiated from the surrounding water and can be both sized and tracked. The key is the automatic processing which has to work in the opposite way from that of a traditional radar - to spot oil we are looking for a very slight reduction in radar return caused by the reduced back-scatter from the "smoothed" surface, radars usually seek small increased returns from floating or semi-submerged objects. Separating these smoothed areas from the surrounding “noisy” sea requires sophisticated algorithms and a large amount of processing power. MantaDigital’s high performance core processor has been the key to enabling this functionality to be built into a commercial radar system. Oil Spill Detection Datasheet - 2

MANTA OIL SPILL DETECTION RADAR MantaDigital can be tightly integrated with thermal imaging systems not only to display the camera image on the screen but to also control where it points. This allows it to follow tracked radar contacts or be locked to a specific location. This is a perfect solution for the detection and identification of pirates, oil spills and ice bergs not to mention the monitoring of your own vessel, vehicles and even people. Radar and thermal detection technology can play an important part in the detection and analysis of oil spills at sea. Usually special care has to...
