Soon after the introduction of the highly successful Commodore 42 it became clear that a number of discerning owners would welcome the introduction of a larger luxury Hardy with similar performance to the 42 and sea-keeping to match. The new design had to be of a size and layout that allowed the larger family to cruise together on occasion, but be manageable by a couple for long periods and distances.
