Product catalog summary
Introduction
SE 84 Nano is a high-performance hot-melt epoxy prepreg designed for applications requiring high compressive strength. It utilizes nanotechnology and 3M™ Matrix Resin to enhance mechanical properties, offering a 20% increase in compressive strength when vacuum bag moulded and up to 25% when pressure moulded compared to SE84LV. It is suitable for various moulding processes and is ideal for strength-driven components.

Processing Notes
Preparation: Thaw prepreg in a sealed bag to prevent moisture condensation. Ensure the mould surface is release coated and vacuum integrity tested.
Laying-Up: Use a release agent-treated tool, apply peel ply, and cover with perforated release film. Install a vacuum bag and check for leaks before curing.
Curing: Recommended cure is 12 hours at 85°C (185°F) under vacuum. Faster cures are possible at higher temperatures. Maintain vacuum pressure above -0.85 bar.

Core Bonding
Compatible with various core materials, including foams and honeycombs. Special procedures are required for different foams. SA 80 adhesive film is recommended for Nomex™ or aluminium honeycombs.

Product Information
SE 84 Nano prepregs are available in various fabric forms and tapes. Store in a freezer to maximize shelf life. Minimum cure time is 12 hours at 85°C (185°F) using vacuum bag processing.

Cured Resin Properties
Density: 1.49 g/cm³ (ASTM D792).

Laminate Properties
Data is based on mechanical testing of a single batch. Vacuum bag moulded laminates show high tensile and compressive strengths. Press moulded laminates offer even higher compressive strengths and glass transition temperatures.

SE 84 Nano-1

SE 84 Nano™ HIGH PERFORMANCE PREPREG ¬ Developed for applications where compressive performance is key Utilises Nanotechnology for outstanding mechanical properties when vacuum-bag or press-moulded Extremely low exotherm in thick section Incorporating 3M™ Matrix Resin Performance combined with handling and processing attributes of SE84LV Controlled flow SE84 Nano retains a flexible cure envelope with cure as low as 80°C (176°F) or for faster moulding of components at 120°C (248°F). It is compatible with vacuum bag, pressmoulding, autoclave and other pressure moulding processes. With its very high compressive strength it is targeted at components with strength-driven designs such as dagger boards, bulkheads, fixing plates and hull inner skin. For stiffness-driven components, SE84 Nano provides equivalent stiffness properties with a 20% increase in strength for peace of mind. SE84 Nano is a high performance hot-melt epoxy prepreg. When vacuum bag moulded SE84 Nano exhibit is a 20% increase in compressive strength compared to SE84LV through a combination of Gurit proprietary formulation technology and 3M™ Matrix Resin. This marriage of technology delivers a significant boost to mechanical properties with the cure and handling characteristics of SE84LV. When pressure moulded compressive strength increases by up to 25% compared with SE84LV. 2000 1800 1600 1400 1200 1000 800 600 400 200 0 Vacuum Moulding Press Moulding SE 84 Nano can be used in sandwich structures with honeycomb and foam and retains compatibility with the toughened SA 80 Adhesive Film.

PROCESSING NOTES - GENERAL PROCESSING NOTES - CURING Cure Cycles When preparing the lay-up the prepreg should be removed from the freezer and allowed to thaw in a sealed bag. This may take 6 to 24 hours depending on roll size. This prevents atmospheric moisture from condensing on the prepreg which may cause voiding on cure. The mould surface should be release coated and must have been tested for vacuum integrity prior to lay-up. For a good balance of composite properties, it is recommended that the laminate is cured at 80°C (176°F) for a minimum of 12 hours. A laminate may be cured in two stages...
