fincantieri / naval vessels Schooner Class Genoa, Private collection Among the outstanding ships built by Fincantieri, the three-masted schooners “Orietta” and her sister ship “Fiammetta” deserve attention since they were the last sailing ships built in Italy for commercial trade. Moreover, their hull construction (nearly 40 metres in length) was really the swan song of building in wood. Wood and copper nails made the two schooners the ideal platforms for magnetic mine-sweeping, using their small auxiliary engine. Indeed, both ships were taken over by Italian Navy and served in Word War 2 for this purpose. Their capacity to operate in open seas is a feature of modern Offshore Patrol Vessels. Inoltre lo scafo (lungo quasi 40 metri) era davvero il “canto del cigno” nelle costruzioni in legno. La struttura in legno con chiodi di rame fece sì che le due golette fossero le piattaforme ideali per operazioni di ricerche di mine magnetiche, avvalendosi del piccolo motore ausiliare. Di fatto ambedue le navi furono prese in possesso dalla Marina Italiana e servirono a questo scopo durante la seconda guerra mondiale.
