fincantieri / naval vessels Feluca Class A typical Mediterranean vessel, the “Feluca” was the first choice ship to transport passengers and light goods along the coastline, as well as sudden raids made by corsairs and pirates against commercial shipping. Speed and manoeuvrability were typical features of the “Feluca” and were made possible by oared propulsion as well as 2 or 3 lateen sails. Given her high degree of flexibility the “Feluca” was used for a long time (until the mid 19th century) as a fishing boat, mainly in Southern Italy, Spain and the coasts of the Eastern Mediterranean. The vessel shown here, flying the Spanish flag and approaching the Genoa harbour, is from a water colour by Antoine Roux (1765–1835). The missions carried out by Feluca, especially in her early days, were very similar to the tasks undertaken by FAC in modern Navies. La “Feluca” era nota per la sua velocità e manovrabilità, rese possibili dalle sue 2 o 3 vele latine ed eventualmente dalla propulsione a remi. La grande flessibilità di impiego ha garantito alla “Feluca” un periodo di utilizzo particolarmente lungo (fino a metà novecento) come peschereccio, per lo più nel Sud Italia, in Spagna e lungo le coste del Mediterraneo orientale. La nave qui illustrata, battente bandiera spagnola e in avvicinamento al porto di Genova, è stata ritratta in un acquerello di Antoine Roux (1765-1835). Le missioni portate a termine dalla Feluca, specialmente nel suo primo periodo di utilizzo, erano molto simili ai compiti oggigiorno svolti dal FAC in Marina.
