Inshore Patrol Vessels-1

fincantieri / naval vessels Bovo Class Genoa, Private Collection The painting shows a particular, fine ship with a bovo hull, where a paredgia rig has been fitted. Called “The Veloce” she was enlisted in the Navy of Piemonte in 1815 as a “Bovo”. Slender hulls were typical of privateers at the beginning of the century and are rather different from the shape of merchant bovos at the end of the century: we might well imagine that the ship was built as a blockade runner, then taken over by the Navy and re-rigged to be more suitable for a powerful armament on her bow. “The Veloce” performed a long, fruitful activity of patrolling the Ligurian coast from the French border as far as Tuscany before being struck off the Navy list, probably in 1845. Her mission was similar to that of a modern IPV. Inshore Patrol Vessels Head Office Via Genova, 1 - 34121 Trieste (Italy) ph. +39 040 3193111 - fax +39 040 3192305 Naval Vessels
