This model of raft is approved by the Italian Ministry of Infrastructures and Transports in compliance with the new Decree for the regulation of safety at sea, issued on August 12*' 2002 and published on the Official Gazette n. 232 dated October 3rd 2002. Such a Decree assimilated the guidelines of the ISO 9650 Regulation that in 2002 was still under consideration for approval. Therefore it represents the Italian rendering of the future European Regulation as far as the safety of the pleasure boater that will bring the Regulations of all the countries of the European Community into line under the CE mark. Up to now, notwithstanding the approval and publication of the new international ISO 9650 Regulation on March 1" 2005, its application is not yet compulsory for all the European countries. Just France decided to adopt it, first country in Europe. Italy and Spain still require that the leisure rafts on board Italian and Span- ish flagged boats comply with their national Decrees issued when the ISO 9650 Regulation was still in the process of approval. The ISO 9650 rafts complying with the Italian Regulation are conceived for the ocean navigation and are manufactured in accor- dance with the most modern criteria to grant safety and comfort even in case of a long stay on board. In fact, the shape of the arch tube supporting the canopy ensures a higher inner height inside the raft, the boarding ramp, together with an external and an internal ladder makes the boarding easier and a double inflatable floor for thermal insulation, as well as some thermal protective bags assure the maintenance of an acceptable temperature inside the raft, even in case of rough weather. The newly designed ballast bags, thanks to their larger capacity, ensure the raft a higher stability. To allow a longer permanence on board, the equipment includes food and drinking water rations, a fishing kit and a first-aid kit. In addition, in order to make the rescue easier, these rafts are equipped with an external and internal light and retro-reflective tapes on the canopy, with smoke signals, parachute rockets and red hand flares for signalling.
