Selection
Guidance for selecting oil coolers includes performance examples and graphs showing heat dissipation and pressure losses. Selection can also be done using a computer with details such as oil type, viscosity, flow rate, desired outlet temperature, heat dissipation, and cooling water temperature.
Installation
Oil coolers should be mounted to ensure they are full of water and connected for counterflow. A modulating water control valve is recommended to prevent pressurization when the system is off. Water flow rates should not exceed recommendations, and water pH should be between 7.2 and 7.8. In hydraulic systems, the cooler should be in the return pipe to the tank, or a separate circuit with its own pump may be used in cases of flow and pressure fluctuations. Oil pressure should be higher than water pressure to prevent contamination, and a filter with a maximum permeability of 2.5mm should be used before each circuit inlet.
Seals
Standard seals are made of nitrile, but seals for fire-resistant fluids are available at extra cost. Specify these by adding a suffix to the oil cooler type number: EP for Ethylene Propylene and VT for Viton.
Marine Use
Standard cast iron end covers are suitable for fresh water. For contaminated or sea water, bronze end covers are available at extra cost, with a modified type number.
High Temperature Oil
Coolers for oil temperatures up to 150°C and 200°C are available. For 150°C, modify the type number; for 200°C, a limited range with a cast iron shell, Viton seals, and a special tube stack is available.
Mining Applications
A limited range of oil coolers is available for underground coal mining and water pressures up to 35 bar, featuring a cast iron shell, Viton seals, and cupro-nickel tubes.
General Information
For applications not covered, contact the supplier for installation advice. Multiple units can be connected in series or parallel if needed.
Specifications and Recommendations
  • Ensure oil pressure is higher than seawater pressure to prevent contamination.
  • Coolers should not be under seawater pressure when not in use.
  • Seawater outlet pipes should flow freely to waste.
  • Avoid contact between stainless steel seawater pipes and the oil cooler.
  • Do not exceed specified maximum flow rates.
Operation and Maintenance
  • Design cooling systems to minimize damage from leaks, as indefinite product life cannot be guaranteed.
  • Maintain higher oil pressure than seawater pressure to avoid contamination.
  • Isolate coolers from seawater pressure when not in use.
  • Ensure free flow of seawater outlet to waste.
  • Avoid using stainless steel seawater pipes and fittings with the oil cooler.
  • Do not exceed maximum flow rates.
