Hilger founded the company in Ziegelhausen near Heidelberg, the core business focussed on the distribution of spray valves and v-belts produced by an American manufacturer. Through the development of high quality innovative products the company soon developed into an important supplier within the German marketplace. In 1936, Wilhelm Kern took over the management of the company and built up the trading company Hilger u. Kern that later became Hilger u. Kern GmbH.
