Today's Standards Since 1999, Cummins has tested and certified marine engines to the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) MARPOL 73/78 Annex VI regulation, referred to as IMO Tier I. Ratified in 2005, IMO Tier I is a global exhaust emission regulation focused exclusively on nitrogen oxides (NOx). This regulation applies to diesel engines with power greater than 130 kW installed on ships on or after January 2000. Representing an 80% reduction in NOx compared to existing Tier I levels, IMO Tier III goes into effect Vessels with a keel-laid date on or after January 1, 2016 that travel in NOx Emission Control Areas (ECA) will require IMO Tier III certified engines.
