ONYX - 1

Switch Mode BATTERY CHARGER User's Manual and a guide to professional battery charging. For Starter/Deep Cycle batteries. The ONYX is a primary switch mode battery charger with combined Float and Pulse Maintenance The ONYX is designed to offer maximum life for the battery. ONYX is a member of a family of pro- fessional chargers from CTEK SWEDEN AB. It represents the state-of-the-art of today's technology for battery charging. Please read these operating instructions carefully before operating the • The charger is designed for charging lead-acid batteries from 14-225 Ah. Do not use for any other purpose • Always use safety glasses and turn your face away from the battery when making or breaking • A battery being charged could emit explosive gasses. Prevent flames and sparks close to the • Always provide good ventilation when charging • Avoid covering the charger • Battery acid is corrosive. Rinse immediately with water if acid comes into contact with skin or eyes. Seek medical advice • Don't charge a damaged or frozen battery • Never operate a damaged charger • Never place the charger on top of the battery when charging You should always check the charger system before you leave it turned on or unobserved for any - Connecting the equipment to a battery fitted in the vehicle: 1. When the battery cable is being connected or disconnected, the plug of the ONYX must be disconnected from the power socket 2. Establish which pole is ground (connected to the chassis). Normally the negative pole is 3. Charging a battery grounded to the negative terminal: Connect the red cable to the positive terminal and the black cable to the chassis of the vehicle. Make sure that the black cable is not connected in the vicinity of the battery or to the fuel pipe 4. Charging a battery grounded to the positive terminal: Connect the black cable to the negative terminal of the battery and the red cable to the chassis of the vehicle. Make sure that the red cable is not connected in the vicinity of the battery orto the fuel pipe 5. Ensure that the battery cables are correctly connected before the start of the charging process If the battery cable is incorrectly connected, a protection circuit prevents either the charger or the battery being damaged. In such cases the indicator lights up to indicate a fault. Then start again at - Connecting the ONYX to a battery not fitted in a vehicle: 1. When the battery cable is connected or disconnected, the plug of the ONYX must be discon- nected from the power socket 2. Connect the red cable to the positive terminal and the black cable to the negative terminal 3. Before the start of the charging process ensure that the battery cable is correctly connected. If the battery cable is incorrectly connected, a protection circuit prevents either the charger or the battery being damaged. In such cases the indicator lights up to indicate a fault. Then start again at Start charging 1. Once you have established that the battery cable has been correctly connected you can start the charging process. To do so, insert the charger plug into the socket. The charger indicates POWER ON, green indication light (A) 2. The lamp for Deep Discharged battery (1) will indicate if the battery has been discharged down 3. Normal charging will be indicated by the lamps for Deep Discharged (1), Bulk Charge (2), Absorption Charge (3) or Maintenance Charge (4). The lamp for maintenance means that the battery is fully charged. The charge will restart if the voltage drops. The charger can be connected 4. If nothing happens: If the indicator for POWER ON is still illuminated, but no other indicator is Illuminated, the connection to the battery or the chassis could be faulty, or the battery could be defective. If the charging process has not started, this could be due to the fact that the power socket is not supplying a current 5. The charging could be interrupted at any time by disconnecting the plug from the power socket CHARGING CYCLE ONYX performs a 5-step fully automatic charge cycle Softstart: Starting phase for charging. The current is restricted. It ends when the voltage is above 12V. Lamp 1 indicates this phase. There is a timeout after 4 hours and the charger switches to Error indication This indicates a faulty battery or an undersized charger for the battery pack Bulk: Main part of the charge cycle when about 80% of the charge is returned. The charge is car- ried out at maximum charge until full voltage is achieved. Lamp 2 indicates this phase. If maximum time for Bulk exceeds the charger switches to Absorption Absorption: Final part of the charge. The voltage is kept constant until the current has dropped to a very low level. Lamp 3 indicates this phase. The phase is also ended if maximum time for absorp- tion exceeds, and the charger switches to Maintenance charge Float Maintenance Reduced voltage and floating current keeps the battery at 100% State of Charge. This step is limited to ten days for minimized water loss. Lamp 4 indicates this phase Pulse Maintenance Charging varies between 95% and 100% state of charge and keeps the battery in perfect condition when it is not in use. Lamp 4 indicates this phase. The charger can be connected for months at a time. The charger continuously measures the terminal voltage. If the terminal voltage drops below a lower limit, the charger automatically goes back to the beginning of the charging curve BULK CHARGING TIME OVERHEATING PROTECTION The ONYX is equipped with overheating protection. In high ambient temperatures the output power Is reduced. Do not cover the charger The ONYX is maintenance-free. The charger must not be opened; doing so will invalidate the war- ranty. If the power cable is damaged it must be replaced by CTEK or its authorized representative The charger casing can be cleaned using a damp cloth and mild cleaning agent. Remove the plug from the power socket before cleaning BATTERY CABLES ONYX is equipped with a set of battery cables with battery terminal clips and one set of battery cables with eyelet terminals
