Cathelco Seawater Pipework Anti-fouling

Product catalog summary
Overview
Cathelco is a prominent manufacturer of marine pipework anti-fouling systems, with over 20,000 installations globally. The company focuses on preventing bio-fouling in seawater cooling systems to avoid blockages and inefficiencies in marine vessels.
Company Background
With over 50 years of experience, Cathelco serves major cruise and commercial vessel operators and over 40 navies. The company has expanded its Chesterfield, UK facilities to boost production and R&D, ensuring quick customer response. It maintains a global network of agents and strategic equipment stocks worldwide.
System Specifications
The Cathelco system employs an electrolytic principle for continuous marine growth protection without chemicals. It combines anti-fouling and corrosion suppression, offering various control panels and anodes for different vessel sizes. The system is environmentally friendly, approved by classification societies, and does not interfere with desalination processes.
Key Benefits
  • Prevents blockages and reduces maintenance costs.
  • Operates automatically with minimal crew attention.
  • Easy installation and environmentally benign.
  • Custom-designed systems for specific applications.
System Operation
The system uses copper and aluminium anodes to release ions that prevent marine organisms from settling, operating effectively with copper concentrations as low as 2 parts per billion.
Control Panels
  • Modular Control Panels: Compact and lightweight for easy installation.
  • Mini Control Panels: Suitable for smaller craft with clear displays and alarm features.
  • Nano Control Panels: Ultra-compact for confined spaces, ideal for luxury yachts.
Anode Types and Mounting
  • Copper Anodes: Protect steel pipework through copper ion creation.
  • Aluminium Anodes: Assist in anti-fouling and create anti-corrosive films.
  • Dual Purpose Anodes: Combine anti-fouling and corrosion suppression.
  • Ferrous Anodes: Protect cupro-nickel pipework on naval vessels.
Applications
Cathelco systems are used on commercial vessels, naval ships, fast patrol craft, frigates, and submarines, tailored to meet specific vessel needs for bio-fouling and corrosion protection.
Submarine Systems
Compact dual-purpose anodes are provided for submarines, tailored to specific classes due to space constraints.
Aircraft Carriers
Multi-anode systems treat large seawater volumes for engine cooling, refrigeration, air conditioning, and firefighting, with notable installations on HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales.
Cruise Ships
Designed for high seawater flow rates, Cathelco systems offer anti-fouling and corrosion suppression with minimal copper concentration, aligning with environmental standards. Anode replacement is scheduled every five years.
Smaller Vessels
Miniaturized systems like Nano and Mini systems provide anti-fouling protection for smaller crafts, offering compact control panels and versatile anode options.
Omni Anodes
Suitable for space-restricted applications, providing integral cathodes to prevent stray current corrosion.
Worldwide Service Network
Cathelco has a global network for sales and service, ensuring immediate support for their products.
ICCP Hull Corrosion Protection
Cathelco leads in ICCP systems for various vessels, offering advanced anodes and control panels.
Seafresh Reverse Osmosis Desalinators
Acquired by Cathelco, Seafresh provides durable desalination systems for a wide range of vessels, supported by Cathelco's international network.

How the Cathelco system operates The Cathelco system has proved to be an extremely effective and versatile system for eliminating blockages in seawater pipework caused by biofouling. The system is based on the electrolytic principle and usually consists of pairs of copper and aluminium anodes which are mounted in seachests or strainers and wired to a control panel. In the case of cupro-nickel pipework, a ferrous anode is used instead of the aluminium anode. In operation, the copper anode produces ions which are carried by the flow of seawater, creating an environment in which barnacles and mussels...

Types of anodes and mounting arrangements Anti-fouling systems for box coolers Seachest mounted system Cathelco has developed a range of anodes with mountings which enable them to be installed in the seachests or strainers of almost any type of vessel. Detailed drawings are supplied for every ship to assist in installation and ensure that the anodes are positioned for maximum effectiveness in the seawater flow. The size of the anodes is determined by the flow rates and their anticipated design life, taking into consideration the scheduled dry docking period. The anodes can be installed using...

Systems for smaller vessels By miniaturising control panels and anodes, Cathelco have brought the benefits of pipework anti-fouling technology to a wide variety of smaller craft including offshore supply vessels, workboats, small ferries and tugs. Many of these vessels operate continuously within in-shore waters where there is a much higher risk of bio-fouling. By fitting a Cathelco system and eliminating problems of blockages in seawater lines serving engine cooling systems, considerable savings can be made in fuel usage and maintenance costs. Nano Systems This system represents the ultimate...
