Newletter 2014 - 1

The newsletter of Bruntons Propellers Jeanne goes non-stop with Autoprop! Much less noise! Much less vibration! Although she would never consider it of herself, Jeanne Socrates is a remarkable woman. Having already sailed single handed around the world twice, but with enforced stopovers on the way, she has finally made a single handed non-stop circumnavigation. Her epic voyage started on the 22nd of October 2012 and was completed on the 8th of July 2013. At Bruntons we have a special reason for following the progress of this brave and determined lady; her yacht ‘Nereida’ is equipped with an Autoprop. In fact, all of Jeanne’s trips, on two yachts, have been with Autoprop propulsion and she has nothing but kind words to say about them. All of us at Bruntons congratulate Jeanne. For anyone, male or female and of any age, a non-stop sail around the world is a tremendous achievement but, to do it at the age of 70, and with so many negative experiences on previous attempts; which would have put most off the idea altogether, is remarkable. Whether it’s a new boat that you want as quiet and as vibration free as possible under power, or your current boat creates more noise and vibration than you would like the SigmaDrive from Bruntons is the solution. There are other products that have been around for many years which reduce these problems but SigmaDrive is a thoroughly 21st century design and utilises the latest technology to take noise and vibration reduction to new and much lower levels. SigmaDrive is a highly innovative transmission devise for yachts and workboats with engines from 10hp to 1300hp and serves as both an engine and shaft coupling and a thrust bearing. Its ability to handle a 4 degree misalignment in any direction, with a total of 8 degrees, is the secret of its noise and vibration reduction abilities. Fitting the unit could not be simpler; there’s no need to slip the vessel, the unit just bolts in place of the standard shaft coupling and uses the existing prop shaft, again without modification. Much reduced vibration and noise are only two of the many benefits to fitting a SigmaDrive unit. With seals and bearings always perfectly aligned their life expectancy goes up and because SigmaDrives are manufactured from a special bronze alloy, with no rubber or bearings in their construction, they are a low maintenance product which will have a very long service life. With SigmaDrives available for vessels with water jets, pod drives and V drive gearboxes as well as conventional propulsion systems there are few boats that cannot benefit from this remarkable invention. Oh, and if you are lucky enough to own a boat with an engine of more than 1300hp don’t despair. We will happily build a custom version just for your vessel. For more information on SigmaDrive go to the Bruntons SigmaDrive site at – www.sigmadrive.info. You can read about Jeanne and her experiences at www.svnereida.com. Catamarans love Varifolds More and more catamaran builders and owners of existing craft are choosing to fit Varifold propellers to their yachts. Finnish company, Ocean Quality Systems, who are well known for the high quality of their work commissioned German Frers to design their Ocean Explorer C-60 Catamaran. After careful consideration the company have fitted the first of the semi-custom built vessels with two 25” Varifolds. She was launched in the autumn of last year. Bruntons CPP System Goes HEME It feels as though every time someone thinks of efficient propulsion these days they think...

Similar yacht Another Autoprop around the World Jeanne Socrates, whose story is on the front page of this edition, will have used her Autoprop very little during her non-stop circumnavigation, but most Autoprops that undertake the task of getting a yacht around the world see quite a different usage pattern. Over the years we have received countless stories of the help that Autoprops have given, not just in their ability to cut fuel consumption but also to get vessels out of difficult situations that were often too much for other yachts. Steve Everett was fitting out his Taswell 49 for a...

CNB choose Varifold Mention the name CNB Yachts and those who know their superyachts will immediately think of such superb craft as ‘Hamilton II’, ‘Only Now’ and ‘Mari Cha II’. These vessels were all built by the highly skilled workforce at CNB and demonstrate only too well the amount of thought given to the design and construction of each and every yacht they build. That detailed consideration goes into every aspect of the yacht’s design so we were delighted when the company decided to fit Varifold propellers to their new semicustom sailing yacht, the CNB 76. The first yacht is, as you can...
