Industry Challenges
Traditional underwater filming is cumbersome, requiring extensive gear and time. Safety regulations for commercial diving are becoming stricter, complicating the involvement of divers. Current underwater robotics lack the camera quality needed for professional videography, and divers can disturb marine wildlife.
About Boxfish
Founded by Craig Anderson and Ben King, Boxfish Research aims to revolutionize underwater cinematography with advanced ROV technology. Dissatisfied with existing solutions, they developed the Boxfish Luna, an underwater drone offering superior image quality and control.
Introducing Boxfish Luna
The Boxfish Luna is designed for professional cinematographers, offering precise control and stability with eight 3D-vectored thrusters. It is compact, lightweight, and can be set up quickly, making it ideal for replacing divers in unsafe situations. The Luna can film up to 1,000m deep and is effective in confined spaces and strong currents.
Boxfish Solution
The Luna provides full control over lighting and camera positioning, with real-time 4K footage monitoring. It features interchangeable lenses and domes, high sensitivity, and advanced stabilization. The drone is equipped with sensors for depth, humidity, and battery monitoring, and offers up to 15 hours of operation per charge.
Technical Specifications
The Luna supports 8K and 4K recording, with high ISO sensitivity and interchangeable lenses. It includes powerful lighting, navigation cameras, and a robust control console. The tether system allows for extensive range and durability.
Future Developments
Boxfish Research is enhancing software and firmware for improved user experience and exploring automation to assist operators in capturing optimal shots.

Industry Challenges. • Boxfish Research was founded by Craig Anderson and Ben King — two engineers with passion for diving, underwater exploration and photography. In 2016, they met while trialling home-built ROV’s (remotely operated vehicles) at the same time and location in Auckland, New Zealand. The duo were disappointed with the results of the trial, and felt ROV technology had been stagnant since the 90’s. An avid underwater photographer, Craig had been forced to give up diving and was determined to create a solution that captured the same image quality. Restrictions on using divers in certain...

We really see the future in replacing divers with underwater drones in situations that may be unsafe, which increases safety and lowers the costs of expeditions. The ROV housing and acrylic optical dome option allow Boxfish Luna to film up to 1,000m, well beyond divers’ capability. Moreover, it is a compact yet sturdy and stable vehicle that can easily manoeuvre in confined...
