clifton - 1

POTENTIAL USERS GUIDES AND OUTFITTERS – high maneuverability, shallow draft, expansive interior room and rugged construction allows comfortable access to remote fishing and hunting opportunities for a world wide customer base. WHITEWATER & OCEAN ADVENTURES – rugged construction, powerful engine and pump combination make this boat a natural for whitewater enthusiasts seeking new rivers to navigate and oceans to explore. GOVERNMENT AGENCIES – constructed to exceed USCG certification standards this boat will allow law enforcement, wildlife management, search and rescue, fisheries and the military years of dependable, trouble free service. When John Clifton decided to purchase his next boat he went looking for someone to build a rugged, dependable boat that he could use for his hunting and fishing excursions around his home in Ketchikan, Alaska. He found Darell Bentz and began putting together the boat of his dreams. John eventually chose a 27’ single Cummins diesel with a Hamilton 274 jet pump. John had several unique requests that were incorporated into the boat. He not only wanted to run the rivers around Ketchikan but also be able to use the boat in the ocean. Bentz changed the typical 11 degree deadrise to 14 degree constant to soften the ride for his ocean excursions. Next, instead of the Bentz nose design, he wanted a pointed nose with a recessed bow to be able to haul additional items if necessary. John also wanted to be able to load his 4wheeler onto the aluminum tread high deck over the motors. This was accomplished by placing a gate in the rear handrails. Due to the heavy rains in his area, John chose a hard top with slider side windows and dual latches on the doors to keep the cabin water tight. On the dash he requested a video sounder, VHF radio incorporated with his GPS and a compass. All items necessary if caught in the unpredictable Alaskan weather. This design also incorporates the mechanical stick steering pioneered by Bentz Boats.
