powerRibs 5005

powerRibs 5005

Product catalog summary
Fabric Construction
The powerRibs fabric is constructed using flax fibers arranged in a -45°/+45° configuration with a fiber tex of 1500 TEX. The fabric weight is 215 gsm with a grid-like architecture featuring a 14 mm mesh size. Standard dimensions include a width of 170 mm and a roll length of 50 m.
Product Description
Designed for high-performance, environmentally friendly composite products, powerRibs fabric enhances the stiffness of thin composite shells with minimal weight addition. It is particularly effective in reinforcing tubular structures by increasing hoop strength.
Technical Specifications
The composite properties include a Young’s modulus of 3.45 GPa in the wavy ribs direction and 2.65 GPa in the flat ribs direction, a shear modulus of 280 MPa, and a Poisson's ratio of 0.04. The density is 363.6 kg/m3 with a thickness of 1.21 mm.
Mechanical Composite Properties
The powerRibs' discontinuous 3D structure provides high damage tolerance and maintains integrity even when damaged. The equivalent modulus varies due to the ribs' bonding orientation.
Important Facts
Compatible with epoxy and polyester, powerRibs require drying before use. A flexible vacuum bag is essential for optimal rib structure formation. The fabric can be used as the last layer or beneath another fabric layer for enhanced stiffness.
Ecological Aspects
Flax fiber reinforced plastics offer significant environmental benefits over carbon fiber reinforced plastics, with 85% lower water usage, CO2 footprint, and embodied energy.
Processing Guidelines
PowerRibs are suitable for open mold processes such as vacuum infusion, bladder inflation molding, wet lay-up, and prepreg methods. Key steps include placing the powerRibs as the last layer, using a flexible vacuum bag, and ensuring excess resin for impregnation.

Fabric construction Fibre type: Flax (EU) Construction: -457+45° Fibre tex: 1500 TEX Fabric weight: 215 gsm +/- 5% Architecture: Grid-like fabric with 14 mm mesh size Measurements Standard roll length: 50 m Product Data Sheet powerRibs Art No. 5005 Product description powerRibs fabric is designed for manufacturing fiber reinforced composite products with high performance and low environmental impact This special fabric creates a rib structure on one surface of the composite layer, thus significantly stiffening thin composite shells with little additional weight The fabric is especially meant to reinforce tubular structures by increasing hoop strength. Mechanical composite properties Due to the discontinuous 3D structure, the mechanical properties of the powerRibs cannot be described in a generic way. The mechanical properties of powerRibs applied to a base layer can be represented by an equivalent homogeneous layer added to the laminate. The equivalent layer represents the “smeared” effect of the powerRibs over the part's surface. Note that the equivalent modulus is not identical in both in-plane directions. This is due to the ribs being bonded flat to the base in one direction. However, in the other direction the ribs have to “travel” over the flat ribs at each of their intersections (see modeling FE & 3D guidefor illustration). Due to its grid structure with big tough yarns, powerRibs provides a very high damage tolerance to the part, also ensuring that it stays in one part even when crashed.
