AXXON Book-4

First thing coming through your mind when you are talking about a carbon mast is obviously the weight saving, but besides that, the center of gravity is very critical. A lighter top mast head will induce less pitching and less heeling, which improves performance and comfort. The optimum weight saving can only be achieved by using pre-preg material cured in autoclave.

Technical details Choosing a carbon mast is not an easy process as there are a lot of points to be considered. The main elements to consider are : the composite modulus (weight) the tube section (windage) the manufacturing process (weight and different finish) the mast and rigging geometry (weight, center of gravity (CG)) the hardware: mast head, spreaders, sheave boxes, rigging...(weight) The top management of Axxon have an experience for more than 30 years in carbon mast manufacturing and composite industry. These elements have a significant effect on the mast weight (which can vary from 20%...

2. The tube section The stiffness of a mast depends on the composite modulus used in the manufacturing process (with an equal thickness and diameter, a rubber tube will be less rigid than a steel one), but also of the tube inertia, (at an equal weight, it's easier to bend a 50 mm tube than a 100 mm diameter tube). Therefore, the mast engineering is a compromise between the section size, the wall thickness and the fiber modulus, taking into account the loading in the various panels (distance between the deck and the spreaders). For boats of similar sizes, the weight and section will vary depending...

The Thin Carbon Layer Technology offers even more performance. The new laminating techniques with thin pre-preg layers allow more weight saving and get the possibility to reduce mast section and windage at the same time. Lighter, more aerodynamic, our carbon masts are now even more competitive. Laminating room
