Olthuis' piece de resistance -a gigantic cruise boat terminal - is also destined forthe Persian Gulf. "Everything fits perfectly. The shape is sublimely simple. This is a first." Philippe Starck The young architect aims to produce 'readable' designs which are so strong and simple that they speak for themselves. Timeless, like his 1964 Porsche, or Philippe Starck's furniture. He has drawn inspiration from both: "My background as an industrial designer has instilled in me a love of shapes that exist as integrated standalone products. That's what makes water my ideal medium: you don't need to embed your work in existing constructions, so the design gets a free rein." Olthuis is much sought-after as an interviewee on national and international media. Waterstudio.NL could not wish fora bet- | | ter slogan than 'Netherland - Waterland'. Recently, Olthuis presented his vision in a documentary on the flood catastrophe in New Orleans. But can he remain sharp and challenged, given the shortage of competition? He is visibly astonished by the suggestion: "I constantly ask myself if there is room for improvement. Could it get better than this? Are there any new openings? I just keep drawing. I don't need rival architects around me to keep me alert. In fact, I would be delighted if more firms would start building on water, because it would boost innovation." Dictatorial regimes Olthuis himself says that it is largely thanks to the local rulers that his designs were accepted in the Gulf States: "Obviously, dictatorial regimes cannot be condoned. However, if the leaders have a clear vision, they are able to pursue it. They understand the economic value of building on water because they see tourism as the income-generator of the future. And these countries are, of course, rich as well." In Olthuis' experience, technological innovation needs to go to great pains to prove itself in the Netherlands, whereas the Gulf States say: "We want that project. Dictatoriaal Datzijn ontwerpen vooral in de Golfstaten aanslaan, dankt Olthuis naareigen zeggen aan de leiders van deze landen. "Dictatoriale régimes zijn niet toe te juichen, maar het voordeel is dat de leiders een duidelijke visie hebben én die kunnen uitvoe-ren. Ze zien de economische waarde in van bouwen op het water omdat ze toerisme als inkomstenbron van de toekomst zien. En het zijn natuurlijk rijke landen." Olthuis' ervaring in Nederland is dat techniekzich eerst dubbel en dwars moet bewijzen, terwijl opdrachtgevers in die landen zeggen: 'Dat project willen we. "Vanuit mijn achtergrond als industrieel ontwerper hou ikvan vormen die als een product op zichzelf staan. Daarom is het water mijn ideale bouwgrond: je hoeft je ontwerp niet in te bedden in bestaande bebouwing en het ontwerp komt optimaal tot zijn recht." Olthuis believes it would already make a difference if building on water were routinely included in zoning plans and subject to the same requirements as othertypes of building. Even so, the architect foresees a rosy future for his company in the Netherlands. In a few years politicians and developers will realise that we need water to build on: "We can't keep extending our cities with tower blocks alone. And the rising water level is swallowing up more and more land. If we were to stop pumping round-the-clock, we would be underwater within 42 hours." Now that climate change is such a hot issue, his work is attracting more interest. Waterstudio.NL is geared up forthe challenge. The technology has more than proven itself in the Persian Gulf.
