IMF 1000 Iridium Satellite Telephone Features n n Iridium is a real global satellite system with the ability to reach all of the world´s remote areas including the poles and the airspace. With 66 satellites forming a cross-linked grid in space, the Iridium system is the first low earth-orbiting system offering wireless telephone service. Orbiting only 780 km above earth, these satellites work differently from those at much higher orbits: firstly they are close enough to earth to receive the signals even from handheld phones and secondly, they act as cellular towers in the sky where wireless signals can move overhead instead of through ground-based cells.
