To avoid the chromium-plating of carbon-steel knives, Charles Elsener, the oldest son of the founder urged a steel-millto develop a stainless-steel that could be hardened. After many trials he manufactured in Ibach the first stainless-steel knives. As the results were not quite satisfactory at the beginning great efforts were made the following years to improve the quality of the stainless-steel knives. In 1931 the firm Brown Boveri in Baden/Switzerland was assigned the task of installing at VICTORINOX Ibach the world’s first fully electric steel hardening plant. Afterwards the VICTORINOX pro- fessional and butcher knives become famous first in Switzerland, France and the USA and later worldwide. The last figure of the 5-digit item number code indicates:5.04 0 =polished rosewood handle 1 =red polypropylene handle, dishwasher-proofor red anti-slip, sterilizable FIBROX handle for professional knives 2 =blue polypropylene handle, dishwasher-proofor blue anti-slip, sterilizable FIBROX handle for professional knives 3 =black polypropylene handle, dishwasher-proofor black anti-slip, sterilizable FIBROX handle for professional knives On the illustrations and pricelists pages 22, 26–35 you will find the knives with wooden handles on the left and the corresponding ones with dishwasher- proof polypropylene and FIBROX handles respectively on the right. 6 =other shape of handle 7 =white polypropylene handle, dishwasher-proof Packing 8 =yellow anti-slip, sterilizable FIBROX handle for professional knives The paring knives, page 22, with rosewood and bubin-gawood handles are supplied in boxes of 6 pieces and those with polypropylene handles with patented blade protection in boxes of 20 pieces. For individual self-service wallets there is an extra charge of CHF -.20.The household knives are supplied without extra cost inindividual self-service wallets in boxes of 6 pieces, ex- cepting the following models:Page 26:No. 5.1733, 5.2060-63No. 5.2000–5.2033 only 25-31 cmPage 28:varying kinds of packing Page 29:No. 5.4503The butcher knives on the pages 32–34 are suppliedwith blade protection in boxes of 6 pieces, also the above mentioned exceptions. 9 =lacquered bubingawood handleThe penultimate figure denotes:5.41 0= normal straight edge 1 0= flexible blade 2 0= fluted edge 3 0= wavy edge 4 0= saw edge 5 0= 3 0 + 4 6 0= other shape of blade 7 0= 0 + saw edge Where knives are available in several sizes, please note the length of blade which follows the 5-digit item number code, i.e. 5.18 00.
