To avoid the chromium-plating of carbon-steel knives, Charles Elsener, the oldest son of the founder urged a steel-millto develop a stainless-steel that could be hardened. After many trials he manufactured in Ibach the first stainless-steel
knives. As the results were not quite satisfactory at the beginning great efforts were made the following years to improve
the quality of the stainless-steel knives. In 1931 the firm Brown Boveri in Baden/Switzerland was assigned the task of installing at VICTORINOX Ibach the world’s first fully electric steel hardening plant. Afterwards the VICTORINOX pro-
