Right from the start

Seldén was founded in 1960. What started as a five-man
operation has grown into world market leadership, with
mast manufacturing in Europe and in the USA. We still
perform the same kind of heeling tests today as we did in
1965. The only difference is that our instruments, tools
and production methods have been developed and refined in order to meet the demands of cost-effective quality manufacturing, as well as the demands of serious yachts-men all over the world. We did things right from the start
and we intend to continue doing so.
Heeling test introduced in 1965, 30° of heel to determine the righting moment of the yacht. www.seldenmast.com . Give us the facts The key to a correct rig calculation is the quality of the input data at our disposal. This data consists of hard facts,
plus what we can learn by listening very carefully when
talking to the customer. The ?Seldén Rig Fact sheet? has proven to be a simple and effective way of gathering all the facts required to
calculate the mast, boom and standing rigging. It is where
you note the data on the envisaged type of rigging, the
main dimensions of the sail plan, the location of the chain-
plates and the righting moment of the boat (or the correct
information to help us calculate the righting moment).
The ?Seldén Rig Fact sheet? is available on our web site,
Heeling test today. Materials change. Good methods don?t. Unspecified changes can cause failures Attention to detail In our search for perfection, no detail is considered too small. This applies to everything, from the choice of
materials to stringent testing of the finished product.
Seldén?s product philosophy can be summarised as a com-bination of commitment to quality, a systematic approach and complete focus on achieving the best possible product for the given task. When launching new products we do
all we can to incorporate as many functions as possible
right from the start. Seldén?s unique boom gooseneck
design, with its integral rope function and shaft holes,
provides a good example of what we mean by attention
to detail. Every rig is designed and carefully dimensioned for the particular yacht. We take into consideration the displace-ment, hull structure, rig structure and, last but not least, the demands of the yacht owner and the yacht designer. The rig is then mathematically calculated and dimen-
sioned. With over 40 years of know-how, we have been able to build a knowledge bank of rig design for many different yachts. This collected know-how is available to our designers through a database system. When you buy a car you don?t start changing the position of one of the
wheels. The same goes for a well specified and dimensio-ned rig. Because unspecified changes can cause failures. In order to give the best service, every mast is marked with a specification of mast section and serial number.
