2 3 Safet y at Sea For the las t 4 9 y ears w e’ v e had jus t one goal : t o k eep your h ea d a bove water ! R a cin g or cruisi ng: there are SECUMAR l ifejackets for t he whole family. Many firms have concerned themselves with safety at sea but hardly any have invested so much in survival and the prevention of drowning in distress conditions. That’s why we’re so proud that today SECUMAR is so well known for its innovative products, ongoing research and outstanding quality. The groundwork for this research was started by the firm’s founder Jost Bernhardt with his studies “The Problems with Lifejackets” and “Persons in Water” (1958/1959), analysing the floating characteristics and medical aspects of a body in water, noting the weaknesses and basic ground rules for constructing a better lifejacket. A significant breakthrough was the development in 1958 of a lifejacket that would prevent an unconscious person from drowning. The next step on the route was the development of the modern lifejacket in 1967 as the SECUMAR BS8, the world’s first inflatable personal floatation device; compact, comfortable and fitted with an automatic device that operated on contact with water. Since then the device has been constantly refined until now we have the foolproof ‘Traffic Light’ system, new gas-tight and abrasion resistant materials and the fit and function of extras such as boat emergency lights, sprayhoods and marine radio beacons ever developed to make them more comfortable and safer to use. Now you can see the culmination of these 50 years of development in this catalogue: modern lifejackets with outstanding functionality to hold your head high for your best chance of sur vival at sea!
